True, but before the newer generations for anime were introduced, most of the faces of the characters looked the same anyways  As May and Dawn had blue eyes, there wasn't much to tell them apart from! However, if they stood side by side in XY, I think it'd be a different story |

Then why the slower activity from Serena? If they know Dawn like they claim, there's no reason for them not have Serena participate in scenarios like the Rhyhorn Race or use Fennekin to escape from Team Rocket?
Other than the obsessed Amourshippers, I have little problem with Serena. She's standard. Now after her current episode, I'm hoping to see what else she can bring.

Well one thing is for sure: XY just can't do what DP has already done. Dawn will always be more major to her respective series than any of the other girls, and there is proof to support this.
I think that it's how having a "cute and such" girl keeps the series interesting. BW was blanded (from their POV) with Iris, and although it was shown Iris wasn't popular (just look at the shippings), it's more about female characters in general and not on Dawn's specific impact. Plus, characters such as May and Dawn are more of the type to be shipped with Ash simply because that's the way they are and that's the way the audiences would generally think. Iris did not fit this to most.
What other girl would they have? Serena is obviously what they have to go with, and this comes before the fact that she is an "Ash shippable" type of girl that they can use to keep it "interesting" and get more viewers.
