Going with Paris would made sense although I don't believe she'd need any special reason to pay a visit to Ash. He's more than enough reason (for her). I assume her trip to Unova was mostly for that reason, unless someone can prove me wrong. Such a long way just for musicals and a meaningless tournament doesn't really make sense for someone like Dawn. Wasn't her Unova trip for the Junior Cup or something?

That's what I meant by meaningless tournament and I believe it was the official reason. However, any gym in Sinnoh could've given her better battles so I'm assuming she either didn't know how insignificat it really was or Ash was playing a big role in her decision.

So will Dawn appear at all in XY? Or will she return during a saga after XY?

No one knows right now. It's really up to the writers. I can't remember well, but if the lead director did say that he worked on DP the most (again, I really don't have a good memory), I doubt he'd let Dawn fade away like Misty and May are right now.

As much as I love for Dawn to return, I think it's best for her not to. Lord knows that their experiences with Misty and Brock, while they were around, resulted them to be stagnant most of the time and I don't want that happening to Dawn.
BW Season 2 had the biggest opportunity to bring Dawn back where it was at their need, and their continuing mess of glorifying Iris, introducing Ash's last rival and their forced-pacing resulted in the poorest Pokémon League, calling back Charizard out of desperation, and the dull DA saga.
Pokémon is no longer a series that is a must-see-per-week/day thing to me. Simply it's a series I'm watching out of habit.

But if they do go with that, just pray they don't mess it up. It was okay in BW, but they could have done a lot better

The Pokémon series these days is really all about promoting things and advertising. I don't think the writers care to much about past characters or plots that have now probably gone to waste.
For Dawn to come back is still very unlikely and I do kinda agree with mew slightly. I don't want Dawn coming back and being stuck in the background doing very little. Maybe in the future but most definitely not now.
