I think Ash vs Paul.
I liked that battle a lot, very intense and Infernape’s Blaze attack was epic and Infernape’s beating half of Paul’s team was awesome.

ash & Gary had a much more interesting dynamic, much funnier to see them interact, more development & overall more interesting then I could say about ash & Paul. However, the battles in DP are just overall leagues better than OS (OS is about tied for worst battles in the series with BW while I’d say DP easily has the most interesting & intense battles in the whole series). And so any battle ash had with Paul is better than any battle ash had with Gary. Not to say the ash vs Gary battle in the leauge was boring/bad (probably one of the best battles of OS if not the best), but almost all battles in DP (and all battles with Paul) required strategy & skill, & with Paul there was always a deeper meaning for the battle. OS had little skill involved, & it was only done with quick thinking from ash, where Paul mostly was the one to out strategize (& overpower until the leauge fight) ash in their battles. So I can’t see how people would think leauge ash vs Gary (or any ash vs Gary) fight is better than any ash vs paul fight.

Ash vs Paul obviously. I think Ash battled Gary all of once before their Johto battle, it didn't feel like much of a rivalry. Ash beating Paul was much more cathartic.

Tie. I like Gary's classicness and that he's been Ash's rival from the beginning. But I also like his rivalry with Paul cuz i feel it helped him grow as a person, also i loved how it was like a shout out to the johto games^^ (it even lead to the johto remakes!  ) (johto has been my favorite region for years) I admit I was also tempted to vote 'x and y rival will be better!', since I consider Korrina Ash's REAL x/y rival (especially due to my crush on her lol). But, Korrina isn't really ash's rival in x and y, Alain and Sawyer were, and neither of them were really that interesting IMO compared to rivals like Gary and Paul either. |
