I know, I know, we Pearlshippers want Dawn to return now more than ever in the XY series. However, there could be some potential drawbacks if she ever made an appearance again.
1. Lack of hints
Some people thought that Dawn's cameo in BW was a let down and that there was barely any hints. If Dawn came back in a future series, the same thing could happen again. The lack of hints would make people think "oh this is nothing" or "those two don't mean anything". Also, they may not reference the Countershield or their high five like in BW. Lastly, Ash and Dawn have always been a team, but that fact could be ignored by whoever brings Dawn back.
2. Possibility of being "disproved"
What if Dawn was brought back only to be shown as an inferior partner for Ash? It would be even worse for Dawn to return if they showed Dawn as "not the one for Ash". The writers could say
"oh, DP's girl was great and all, and they had a duet, and they were a team, and DP had great development, but we think XY is better so we're going to trash DP for the couple where it's really at. XY ftw and it's not like we're trying to be DP or anything"
If they would to take Dawn "out of the picture" with her return, then they might as well not give her a return at all.
3. Paul
You can call me weird for this one. But there have been rumors going around of Paul's return and that the animators would love to draw Paul again. Now let's say both Dawn and Paul came on the scene at around the same time, or even during separate times. Let's also say that they did not want Ash and Dawn together and they had to find a substitute person to be Dawn's partner. So they would look around and Paul would be right in front of them because of his likeliness. Then they would put two and two together and boom. And yes, Dawn's the only one they haven't truly "kept away". The writers would try to do such a thing. Honestly, it would be just sad if XY brought Paul back just so Ash could have a good rival. I don't see it, but if Paul does return, then they're desperate. Aren't XY's characterization, development, and rivals good enough? And they better not go KengHika.
Then again, these are just possibilities. It could be very likely that Dawn will not return. But if she does, it may not be good. Especially if they want "someone else" to have it all. It's up to the writers; we'll just have to wait and see.
