If I may, I'd also like to point this out. When May left for Johto, why do contestshippers see this as a hint? I mean you just traveled through Hoenn and Kanto wouldn't traveling to Johto be the next obvious choice? Remember, this was before we found out that contest were even held in Sinnoh. The point is that they are on the same contest track. Together. Like Speedy said, it was much like Gary and Ash; one trying to best the other.

According to May herself, that's who; she mentions it while in Sinnoh. And while they are not necessarily in love, their feelings and relationship go beyond a mere rivalry.
Ash and Gary is a parallel, but May and Drew are a little more than that. Not only do they want to best one another, they also want the best from each other. This is because May and Drew care for one another.

Shoot that didn't sound rude did it? I apologize if so

Yes, these are assumptions, but they are basically logical ones. May said that Drew and Harley were getting harder as rivals, so you can only assume that they compete together as rivals.
Some things are in fact assumptions such as the aforementioned example, but others are not assumptions such as visible blushing. I know, it wasn't explicitly acknowledged but it might as well be true.

Ash and Gary is a parallel, but May and Drew are a little more than that. Not only do they want to best one another, they also want the best from each other. This is because May and Drew care for one another. May only mentioned Drew once in Sinnoh and Harley was mentioned in the same sentence. Now you might say May Drew want the best from each other well the same is said from Ash and Gary. When you get past the early bickering they really did care. When Ash found Gary lying on the ground after trying for the Earth Badge did Ash make fun off his loss? No he picked up Gary and tried to help him. Gary returned the favour later when he found out that Meowth had installed a rocket in the podium Ash was on. Now you say that it's logical that May and Drew have something deeper just by May saying Drew is stronger as a rival. Using that logic you can make any ship you care about seem more likely. That thought process isn't as logical as you think. May said they were getting stronger as rivals because they were getting stronger as rivals. Hell she even mentions that Harley, who I should mention had only defeated May once before, was regularly beating her in contests. If anything that line implies that May needs to pick up her game in Jhoto.

Saying that May mentioned them was only to prove that they competed together, not to show how they liked each other. It is logical that they compete together, and this is with all shipping aside.
But you're right, this piece alone does not show that May has feelings for Drew; there are other things to explain that. It's where the logic is applied.

Harley was mentioned in each reference to Drew, but this does not stop anything. In fact, Harley noticed May and Drew together!
To put it simply, May and Drew still see each other. That's really all I wanted to say. Not really that much logic needed.
How it equates to 'shipping' is another thing but May and Drew's feelings and stories are all covered in AG and BF anyway. And they still frequently saw each other when DP started while in Johto.
Ash and Gary is a good parallel actually. You said Ash helped Gary after losing the 8th gym even after being mocked by him countless times; he cares about him that much. May tended to Drew in the Wynaut episode even when Drew can sometimes mocks her; she cares about him that much as well.
While this could suggest Ash and May have their own 'Gary', remember that May and Drew's relationship involves red roses. Unlike Ash and Gary, May and Drew aren't limited to each other because of gender.

While this could suggest Ash and May have their own 'Gary', remember that May and Drew's relationship involves red roses. Unlike Ash and Gary, May and Drew aren't limited to each other because of gender. I personally think the roses are just part of Drew's flair. Let's be honest: Drew is fabulous. He seems like the type of guy to hand out roses to his rivals just to say, "I'm so sophisticated and fancy, etc." I know, I know, he only gives them to May, but she's his only true rival. Soledad is more of a mentor, and he tries not to associate with Harley. Of course, they became friends, so the roses now would be useless to goad her. I think he stills gives them to her because it's now a sort of ritual. It's his thing. Maybe he has a crush on her, but this is the only thing that really implies it, and even so it depends on how you look at it. And yeah, May blushes sometimes around Drew, but she is a hormonal girl. If someone like Drew gave me roses, I'd blush a little bit sometimes too. But that doesn't mean she's got a crush or anything. She could, sure, but she could just as easily be embarrassed or caught off guard. (And I just want to say that Ash and Gary aren't separated by gender. I would not be surprised if Ash was gay, for all the attention he gives to girls. XD)
