Could we please discuss Contestshipping in a more constructive fashion that would be beneficial to the forum?

With some people, you can't change preference no matter what. They like what they like. buuuut Contest trumps Advance.

It seemed obvious to me from the beginning. Drew benefited May a ton as a character by being her rival, for one.

The way I see it is that Drew happens to be May's Gary. When we first meet Drew he happens to be able to push all of the right buttons to tick off May like Gary would whenever he met Ash. He also happened to be a better coordinator in his first few appearances and he would not let May forget it. Kinda like how Gary was always two steps ahead of Ash and would always point it out to him when ever they met. And every time Drew showed up in the anime May would become extra determined to show the she was better. And once again, just like how Ash would become focused on one upping Gary every time he appeared.
I reckon the final part that shows a Ash and Gary type of rivalry between the two is that over the series they slowly started to go from fierce rivals to friendly rivals. Throughout Jhoto Ash and Gary would meet each other and while they would still try and one up one another it was less out of hostility and more out of a vitriolic friendship. May and Drew started to develop this kind of friendship through out Kanto and it finally came to a head in the Kanto Grand Festival. Much like Ash and Gary's battle during the Silver Conference, this battle was a high point of their rivalry and afterwards they were left to be on more friendly turns.
So while I don't think Drew and May are in love with each other I do believe that they have a massive respect for one another and the treat each other as equals and friendly rivals. Which makes them the, in my own opinion, the coordinator counterpart to Ash and Gary.

If I may, I'd also like to point this out. When May left for Johto, why do contestshippers see this as a hint? I mean you just traveled through Hoenn and Kanto wouldn't traveling to Johto be the next obvious choice? Remember, this was before we found out that contest were even held in Sinnoh.

The point is that they are on the same contest track. Together.
