Here is a list of things the two ships have somewhat in common:
Tag Battle episode
Contest rival "crushing" on the female
Luvdisc
Have similar Pokémon
Tag battle:
May and Ash bicker after being accused by a couple as a "cute" couple. They lost to the couple, but they got over it and beat Jessie and James.
Dawn and Ash fight after losing to the Champ Twins, but quickly got over it to end their ~18 win streak. They double high five with beaming faces looking in as if they were the apple of each other's eyes.
I honestly need help from the experts on this one. Who wins this?
Contest Rival male
For this case...
May's contest rival is Drew.
Dawn's contest rival is Kenny.
May pretty much openly accepted Drew.
Dawn pretty much rejected Kenny (though the dub denies it). Even with a winning tag battle, I believe it's about how a ship does throughout the development of a series. Drew and May's relationship was just too good.
Luvdisc:
According to some pokedex entry, a couple seeing Luvdisc will apparently fall in love. Both ships have this.
Ash and May saw Luvdisc during Movie 9, the most Advanceshipped movie. They also had other hints in the movie, but the Luvdisc are considered as one of them.
Ash and Dawn saw Luvdisc in "Hold the Phione". They were in a submarine watching for Phione, and they happened to see Luvdisc.
Here's why I think Advanceshipping loses. For one, at least three couples were featured in the DP hint: Ash and Dawn (conveniently without Brock), another couple, and surprisingly even
Pikachu and Buneary (Jessie and James count as well, and there were others on the sub)! Also, the other couple confirmed the hint by professing their love because of the Luvdisc. You could even say that Ash and Dawn were having a lovely talk together before entering, and foreshadowed the Luvdisc coming. In my opinion, Pearl had the better Luvdisc hint.
Similar Pokémon:
Ash and May both had a Bulbasaur and a Squirtle. They also both had a Snorlax evolutionary member.
Ash and Dawn only both had a Cyndaquil, but don't forget they traded Pokémon. So I guess Buizel and Aipom could possibly count to an extent.
The shipping between the Bulbasaur was very popular. But just like their trainers, their relationship mirrors Ash and May's. The sole purpose of May's Bulbasaur was to be taught by Ash's Bulbasaur, which is the same as Ash and May to an extent. Before DP, the Kanto starters of May were unevolved, so it made Ash and May even more "similar" for Advancers to use and brag about. However, that would soon change. Bulbasaur evolved into Venusaur and Squirtle evolved into Wartortle. I would interpret this as Ash and May no longer being equal or compatible.
Ash and Dawn's single common Pokémon shows the complete opposite. When Dawn got her Cyndaquil, Ash still had his. After Ash Cyndaquil evolved, Dawn's Cyndaquil evolved as well. Now both Ash and Dawn have a Quilava, which I would interpret as them staying compatible at the same level, even during BW.
Who wins it all? Better not be Advanceshipping.
