I recently read the fanfic "I Can't Live Without You" by demon Alice, and the story got me thinking about a question on Ash and Dawn's relationship. Are they emotionally dependent on one another or do you think what they have would be called love? Don't get me wrong I'm a firm Pearlshipper and I think the two are perfect for one another. This is also not a bashing on the story or the author as I believe everyone has a right to write about what they feel or tell a story their own way, it is instead a discussion on the nature of SatoHika’s love for one another. The story brings a good point in that it talks about the two achieving their dreams first and growing/discovering themselves before trying for a deeper relationship. On a side note the story is good just be prepared for a shocking ending. One could draw a connection from the story to the anime as they go on separate journeys (Unova, Kalos, and Hoehn) to first conquer their life goal. I think they both understand each other's passion for battling and coordinating respectively and don't want to get in the way or distract the other from that goal. Ash never forces or persuades Dawn to come to Kanto and forget about Buneary’s modeling opportunity because he knows how important it is to the Pokémon and to her coordinator. He sacrifices the time they would have spent in Kanto to further Dawn’s career in coordination and fashion/modeling. We can see evidence of Dawn reciprocating these feelings when she is talking to Maylene (DP 66) about her fears and doubts of whether or not her ambitions are holding back Ash. As many have already said Dawn cares about Ash’s success as much as her own, if not more so. I firmly believe that both feel the other is strong enough to achieve their goal without them always their because it's what they left on each other that can never be separated: determination and courage. In a lot of action sequences Dawn is right there with Ash trying to save whoever needs saving, and example would be jumping on Mantine to save their Pokémon who are trapped on a boat (DP 39). Just as Ash helped out Dawn when she was depressed from losing her contests, the coordinator helped the trainer when he kept on losing to Paul. They gave each other the courage to stay on the road to where they wanted to go, never stopping no matter how much pain they were in and always surging forward for the next battle/contest. I think that’s why Pearlshipping works because it isn’t based on crushes or physical attraction but rather understanding and camaraderie. They both understand one another so well that they know how the other thinks, that's why their battles are so intense and no winner is ever decided upon. And they have each other’s backs when their in a pinch. People always talk about Dawn being so confident and so sure about herself but in the beginning she had doubts and was nervous of her abilities to perform. In the end she truly changed because Ash was able to impart that kind of determination of never giving into the bad thoughts, to always bounce back from loses to his best friend. Dawn gave Ash the courage to truly see his mistakes and failures (Paul) and learn from them to become stronger and overcome them as not only a trainer but as a person. I think that's what kept Ash going even past Unova because he knew that it was a bump in the road and at least it was more of a learning experience for him if nothing else. Just like in High Touch they push and pull each other forward but I don't think that means there emotionally dependent on one another because I think both realize that they need to accomplish their goals on their own. I think that's why Ash keeps on going with his dream of becoming a Pokémon master even though he doesn't have his number 1 fan cheering him on, the same can of course be said about Dawn. Their partnership with each other’s goals is so intertwined that it seems there is a part of them that's with them when the battle or participate in a contest. What I mean by that is that they both have invested so much of themselves into the other’s battling and coordinating style that a part of them will always be there to help protect and achieve their dream. Dawn was never a passive observer she always involved herself in making Ash a better trainer because she knew she could. The other poke girls never had that with Ash because they never had the passion that these two had when it came to being the best in their respective fields. Finally I just wanted to add that Ash really has grown up since Sinnoh, not in age mind you but in maturity. He can still act like a kid, it is a kids show, but he seems to have grown into the position of being a leader and to take full responsibility of the role. In the beginning he acted more headstrong and he knew that he had Brock and Misty to bail him out, but as the series progressed he started having a change in his attitude. For those of us who are old enough we can see this when the Original Series transitioned over to Advance. But when Brock came back Ash returned somewhat to his childish way of life. When DP happened he had Dawn with him as his parter in crime and they relied on each other so much. BW is interesting because I feel it sort of does go backwards in some ways with Ash, but he still seems to grow as the series progressed, such as when he refused to go to Onyx island with everyone because he wanted to train for the Junior Cup. The reason I'm talking about this is because when you look at the XY cast there is no older person their to help and protect them. Ash can arguably be stated to be the oldest, since he has been on more journeys. But still there is no Brock, Cilan, Misty, or Tracy there when things go bad. Ash has full embraced himself as the leader of his group now because of Dawn’s support and influence on him. Anyway this is how I feel about how their love, I don't believe they are emotionally attache or dependent on each other because they made each other strong enough to continue on their journey without them. Sorry for such a long post but I really felt passionate about the subject and really like SatoHika, but I hope you guys respond and share your views on the topic. Thanks.

Yeah, 'Can't Live Without You' really is an amazing fanfic, it's one of my favourite pearlshipping ones actually!
Like you said, I guess it could be called emotionally dependant, because they rely on each other for support and help pick each other up. I guess a literal take on that would be in 'Rise of the Darkrai', at the end when everyone thought Darkrai had died. Ash started crying and apologised for not being able to help enough. Dawn, after seeing Ash cry, starts tearing up herself.
This kind of feels like their bond is so strong that they can feel and share emotions, and I guess another example of that is 'Team Shocker' (no clue what episode this is xD)
This time, the roles are switched, with Dawn feeling down over her second appeal round contest loss. You can see the brown in Ash's eyes which usually symbolises his sadness, before he hides them underneath his cap. Despite also being one of Dawn's travel partners, Brock shows no such obvious emotion to Dawn's loss (not that you could really show much emotion with those eyes of his haha), which shows a deeper connection between Ash and Dawn. Also in DP, Brock was sort of shifted to the side and the main focus was on Ash and Dawn, and this can be seen in the movie posters when Ash and Dawn take a more central position than Brock.

That's quite a mouth full! Like... a mouth full of cinnamon buns or... puffins!!! (those pink things Hikari makes for her Pokémon) I had to read the whole thing because this is absolutely amazing! This is what I love about this support group; there are people who really take those two trainer's and their friendship to heart. For some odd reason, their relationship is currently my relationship goal. I want to develop a natural friendship, which NATURALLY can develop into something more. As for Pearlshipping, only time will tell. Of course XY is making things a little more interesting, but I have to say, the point you have proven here kind of makes sense. Satoshi has shown to be more of a leader of the group than he ever has, however, I'm unsure if it's from Hikari's influence but I will still support that case based on the references I have seen over the course of DP, BW, onward to XY.

I agree with many of the points. Their bond was almost like a psychic link in the end, which made them share their emotions, without a need for words. They don't depend on each other, so they can pursue their dreams on their own, though it would be much easier if they were together. I wonder how Ash would've fared if he'd traveled through Unova with Dawn only, but I also acknowledge that it wouldn't have been too desirable because Dawn would've had to remain in the background due to the lack of contests. Kalos would've been a different matter, or they could've travled through Kanto together after Buneary's photo shoot. Since their paths aren't mutually exclusive it pains me to see them apart. It's a shame that Dawn had to go, because there still so much potential. I don't mean the romance aspect, though, because they are too young and preoccupied with their goals, as you said. I'll leave those stories to fanfics set in the future.
Well, I can't really say much without repeating what you said, so I'll cut it short. Their relationship focuses on equality, support, and growing stronger together, far more than a mere physical attraction, and they still remain strong on their own. In my opinion, they have all the prerequisites for their relationship to unfold in even more ways if it is only given the chance to do so.

I think that in the begging they depended a lot one to each other for advices and support !!! But after they managed to build their relationship they didn't try to overwhelm one the other!!!! They didn't want to separate but they respected ones the other dream that made them to take different ways!!!! I think that eventually they will reunite and they will stay together!!! But will happen only when both of them have achieve their goals!!!!!
