It has often been said that Ash and Dawn's feelings for each other are lacking in actual romantic hints. This is true. But, it has also been said that Ash and Dawn have the closest bond, closest friendship, and closest relationship. This is also true, and Ash and Dawn don't even need dating to get that close to one another.
However, it's easy to say that they don't work because they don't have romance. But what if the emphasis was on romantic feelings instead of their relationship? There are already examples out there to look at. But if they were really that close, couldn't they just have added romance? Put Ash and Dawn in another show or anime for even one second. A mutually exclusive duet about each other would automatically turn into romance.
So, a theory could be made by saying they kept Ash and Dawn's relationship at the exclusive partnership level because they were still young. Even if they wanted to make them fall for each other, the true highlight was their unparalleled relationship. I'd like to see Ash have stronger bond with someone other than Dawn and Pikachu.
In other words, Ash and Dawn were so close together that adding romantic feelings to their relationship would make the show too inappropriate for kids. Ash and Dawn would also be too close together for their age, and if they dated in DP, they would be off the charts.

The best thing about Dawn and Ash's bond is it does not feel cliche. No dazing for each other, no over-blushing, no awkwardness. Just simple communications and interactions, sharing similar interests, and genuinely comfortable with each other's company, which builds a stronger affection between each other, thus I believe is an important first step to romance.
I can't be invested in a couple if even one of the characters is whom I care less.

Well here's some evidence! That's from the Italian dub only, but I'm still glad that they interpreted Dawn as having a crush. Pearlshipping must be big in Italy. Now that I think about it, I'm glad Ash and Dawn were in DP and not in XY. XY can create moments, symbols, and feelings, but only DP can muster the strong bonds and relationships. Ash and Dawn may have been more romantic if they were the XY ship, but they would not have the strong relationship that we all love.

Interesting theory, and great evidence there!
To be honest, adding romance to the show wouldn't be bad. I mean, they are experimenting with it now with Serena. And remember, they've acknowledged love ever since Brock.

Yes but Brock never had a true romance!! He always hsd a crush in every episode and for different girls!!!! As for Ash and Dawn I tgink that the writers made them so alike on purpose!!!! Now why they change their minds and they didn't turn it in romance that's bewond me!!!!
