Over time I've had the opportunity to think through why Amourshipping isn't desirable. I've tried not to care, but...
Serena focuses a lot on Ash, right? In fact, I read on bulbapedia she once tried to hold his hand but gave up because she was blushing too much. With that in mind, her "getting" Ash would resonate as success to viewers.
I know that the proportion of kids watchin Pokémon is less now, but the thought of any kid aspiring to be like Serena or emulating her attitude towards life (romance centered) is horrifying. Being like Serena is not aiming high at all. Now I'm not saying Dawn is perfect, but Serena's ship is the one that might get canonity here, and as someone who's been educated, I feel morally bound to at least oppose the image that Amourshipping is giving to impressionable young girls out there.
So I'll say it. Pokémon are shirking their unspoken moral obligation as a kids' show to set a good example.

The thing is, I haven't really thought about the anime as a kids show in a while but I have to agree with you: The thought of a generation of girls idolizing shallowness and dependence on a male makes me sick to the very depths of my soul.

It is now about keeping the anime fans that they do have (aka customer loyalty) by tailoring the anime to give fans what they want. And that means the undesirable (for us) Serena and Amourshipping.

NovaStormAu contraire. A lot of kids in the UK watch Pokémon XY, and it labels itself as a children's show. Whether it is one or not is debatable, as you've suggested, but such an influential show at least has the obligation to give success to those who deserve it to hint towards the right attitude to life. They're loaded- it's not like they need to be desperate to bring in higher and higher ratings. We're talking about something much more deep than the superficial matters of marketing. It's the unspoken moral responsibility that Pokémon holds.

Well I think amour is fab and I also kinda liked the response from the Pokémon producers! but still it's just a kids show and saying that serena is a bad role model for kids out there is kinda rude to say shipping aside :/ it seems like you guys are trying to have a neutral pov but that statement of nova is anything bit neutral xD and if you really think that serena is a bad influence then what about dawn? many Pokémon fans and even big poketubers like brandon and tamashi are thinking that dawn is way too sexualized for a 10 year old o.0 I mean c'mon she's wearing a mini skirt at her age ! 0.0 so if serena really is a bad influence for young girls, so is dawn for sure

amourpearl4ever which is why no one is saying Dawn is a perfect role model, but at least her motivation for starting her journey was her ambition. So I reiterate, sexuality isn't the difference between Serena and Dawn, since they are both ARE oversexualised, but the question is the weight the producers choose to put on this. And I don't think its rude to point this out. It's not insulting anyone as a person by touching on this moral aspect of children's media- and the reason why the "banal evil" of oversexualisation, in philosophical terms, always win, is because people are too scared to discuss it, and stand up to people who tell them to shut up.

IceArceus welcome to anime, where oversexualization is as common as water in the ocean.

IceArceus welcome to anime, where oversexualization is as common as water in the ocean. Sadly, he has a point. Gratuitous nudity and overly beautified bodies are very common, as shown above. But like IceArceus says, we don't have to like it. Despite being a teenage male, I've always disliked it when it went too far for females (which is 98% of the time), possibly because I was raised by my mother alone who disapproved of such things and encouraged equality among the genders. Still, I find it ironic that you're using Kill La Kill as an example of oversexuality. Talk about missing the message of an anime. >O

knightofbalanceYour attitude is what this world needs more of. Also, we would do well to remind ourselves Pokémon defines itself as a children's anime, so the oversexualisation in it, AS WELL as other factors like Serena's motivation (Ash) to start her journey, are made even worse because this is influencing young girls.
