Tagging members through the forum sends a notification the the member that they have been tagged. The purpose of this is to let the the member know either about the thread or that you have mentioned them & would like them to know about it, or it could be a way to reply.
Across the top of the Quick Reply or Reply window is something that looks like this:
These buttons are the automatic tag buttons. All individual display names shown are the display names of all participants of the current thread (icypiplup, ravencupid & SakuraBlossom have all participated in the thread shown in the picture). The "All" at the end is to automatically tag all the participants without having to click each of the individuals one at a time.
The "Staff" automatically tags all the staff of the forum in one go, regardless of whether they are participants of the current thread. Use this tag button with care, & only in dire situations.
"Admins" tag the admins of the site, regardless of whether they are participants of the current thread. This tag button may be used more freely than the "Staff" button, however do try to avoid it.
If you would like to tag anyone else, or you just want to tag these people manually, type @[username]. Note that the username is different to the user's display name, which you usually see. A lot of the time, people's usernames will be identical to their display names, but sometimes they will be different. To find out what someone's username is, either visit the Members list or hover over their display name:
The hovering way of finding out the username tells you exactly what to type. Just as easily, the Members list tells you everything, without the @.
Just for your information, a member's username is the word they type to enter the forum. A member cannot enter the forum with just their display name.
