Pikachu and Buneary are a great parallel to Pearlshipping. Prof. Oak theorized that if two Pokémon fall in love, their trainers would too. Pearlshipping is all about implied and implicit hints, which makes Pearl deeper than the rival ships. Buneary and Pikachu's relationship equates to the emotional romantic side of Pearl. Piplup and Pikachu's more straightforward relations represents the more significant component: Ash and Dawn's best of friendship. Piplup and Pikachu high five just as much as Ash and Dawn, so this shows that Prof. Oak's theory applies to Ash and Dawn unlike other cases. This means that Pikachu and Buneary play just as much a part of pairing Ash and Dawn as Pikachu and Piplup do.
Both Pikachu and Buneary have both beat legendaries: Regice and Phione respectively. Buneary specifically beat Phione for Pikachu, so it goes to show that the feelings are so strong not even legendaries can break it. If it weren't for Pikachu, Buneary probably wouldn't have won. Plus, Pikachu defended Buneary, which shows he cares just as much. Pikachu would later go on to tie with Latios during the same saga. Would Pikachu be able to fight as hard as it did without support from his special Pokémon friends? They don't make it past Cameron in BW. When applied to Ash and Dawn, this shows just how strong they are when they are together and how weak they are when separated (Unova League, XY 5). On a side note Cameron was the one who "stole" Dawn's spotlight on the show, and he was the same one Ash lost to in the league.
In "Get Your Rotom Running!", Dawn was with a scared expression under Ash's arm , which was pointing at the door. Buneary and Pikachu were doing the exact same thing and even looking at Brock! This further validates the parallel of Pikachu and Buneary.
Another interesting thing is that they both have seen Luvdisc conveniently with Ash and Dawn. There's no way to deny the parallel now.
Finally, there are many who notice Pikachu and Buneary. May, Cilan, and Iris have all noticed the two; these are characters from gen 3 and Gen 5! Pikachu conveniently met Buneary specifically, not Piplup, in the BW cameo. Ash is also completely silent during both May's noticing and Iris/Cilan's noticing.
I really like Pikachu and Buneary a lot as a pairing. I highly recommend the episodes "Get Your Rotom Running!", "Doc Brock!", and "Hold the Phione!" for the laughs; DP had some pretty funny filler episodes where Pikachu and Buneary were both involved. It's the only romance with a main character's Pokémon that Pikachu is directly involved in. Should they bring Dawn back for another cameo, the writers should bring back Lagomorph as well. Buneary's continued attraction even in BW symbolizes the longevity of Pearl, as well as Ash and Dawn's high five. I just hope that Buneary doesn't fall in love with Bunnelsby.
Both are under "his" arms.
