I can really only comment on this topic for now since I haven't watched the final DP movie yet and nothing past that. With AG, while I have watched all the movies like 10 years ago or so, I've been trying to watch the entire anime from the start since last year and haven't gotten to the last AG movie just yet. Also, I'm watching the entire thing dubbed.
Having just watched all 5 of these movies for the second time over the last year, this is a bit of a hard choice. I know for sure the Celebi movie is my least favorite, followed by Mewtwo. I think I would place the 5th movie after those, right in the middle of all of them.
---
Two things:
1: Out of these three, I think Celebi had the best setup but didn't really go anywhere fun with it. Could've been all sorts of awesome with young Prof Oak, but they instead just completely focused on Celebi. Sorta feels like how they completely ruined the story and characters of SM (games) with Ultra SM, just to focus more on the Pokémon rather than the actual characters. Even more depressing is that people suggest playing Ultra instead of the original, but I digress.
2: I'm not sure how well known it is that the Japanese version of trailers for movies will sometimes feature stuff that isn't even in the final movies. At least that's what I've heard and seen a bit. Nothing all too significant, except for the first movie. One of the trailers has some short clips of stuff that never happens in the movie, but by far the biggest thing is that it has an older Misty walking along in a park with a pink haired child and the woman from the movie who only appears in the beginning and end. They meet up with presumably Ash's Pikachu. You can imagine thoughts of people's minds for this, like saying the child is Ash and Misty's. I personally don't think so, even as a Pokeshipper, but it very well could have been I guess. I would think by now that there's some confirmation either way, but I haven't looked into it. I also wouldn't put it past them to lie. If you haven't seen it and are curious, here it is. The song playing is the 3rd ending theme "Fantasy in My Pocket", quite the title.
Sorry, I don't think I'd have the chance to say anything about that anywhere else here so I just let it all out.
---
Anyway... Movies 2 and 3... I watched the 3rd movie two times in a row, second time with a commentary track it had, which was kinda fun. Funnily enough, I also "went through" the 1st and 2nd movie a second time as well by playing that hack of FireRed called Ash Gray, which is another one of those things I've been holding onto for years to do while watching the anime.
I'd say the third movie is more consistent with its highs and lows, while the second movie had higher highs and lower lows. Lows such as all the Pokémon that show up and do literally nothing, the villain didn't have much of a backstory (and weirdly appears in a book in the 5th movie for whatever reason). And highs, the way Team Rocket actually helped out was cool. Felt a lot more personal than when they helped out in the Deoxys movie. And the elephant in the room regarding this movie, for me as a Pokeshipper, the Pokeshipping. I really liked that it wasn't some girl constantly hitting on Ash (Silver Conference), it was literally just a girl continuously pestering Misty about Ash. Making comments like she'll "have to get used to Ash's recklessness when they get married". This felt like comeuppance for the episodes where Misty would try to get Ash jealous, sorta turning it around on her. The second movie feels like something I could talk about ad nauseam, while the third I could say, "Yeah it was good." and be done with it. So I'm gonna go with the second movie as my favorite.
Also the dub music in the second movie was good. The song "The Power of One" is my favorite movie theme, and it's gonna be incredibly hard to top.
Again, favorites in order: 2, 3, 5, 1, 4

For me, I’d actually say my ranking would be (from least fave to fave), 4, 2, 1, 5, 3. Movie 4 I kinda agree with, but I did like the young Professor Oak twist. Movie 2 was kinda let down by having maybe a bit too much going on IMO. I did like the epic feel of that movie though, and I’ll admit The Pokeshipping stuff (even though a lot of that was added in by 4kids in the dub) was nice (even though I’m not a Pokeshipper). Movie 1 just left a lot of impact for being the first Pokémon movie and posing a lot of deep thoughts (which most other Pokémon movies don’t cover). I’m personally not even that bothered by Mewtwo’s plan constantly changing. I really like Movie 5 just because I just thought the whole Ash and Latias dynamic was really interesting and held a lot of weight. (Yes I know shipping Ash with Pokémon is weird), but this movie honestly did it surprisingly well. Also need I mention the Latios sacrifice? Sad moment, but brilliant scene. As for Movie 3. That one is my personal fave of Gens 1&2 because I just like that they told a more personal story focusing on a character that is dealing with the grief of her 2 missing parents and wants to live in a fantasy world with her fake parents. Also Entei is just the coolest. Also kinda ironic that the Unown can conjure up all these fake worlds and illusions when they appear in the anime, and yet they can do jack all in the games. I personally think Gens 3 and 4 had the best movies IMO. I’m personally down for discussing any Pokémon movie with you guys. I think they do leave a lot to talk about, regardless of you’re thoughts on them.

jacobbellis2004 I felt like it didn't have enough going on. The "biggest" thing was all the time they decided to waste showing all the different Pokémon showing up without going anywhere with it, though that is how they got Prof Oak and everyone else's attention, even though they also didn't do much other than exposition. That might have added to the feeling like there was a lot there, but there really wasn't. As for the shipping stuff, I was jumping back and forth between the English dub and Japanese sub during all those to see any differences, but mostly just because I wanted that different angle so to speak. Some lines were changed up slightly, but I don't remember any of those moments not being in the original. Another movie did add Pokeshipping in the dub when it didn't exist in the original, that would be in the 6th movie with Jirachi. I wish I didn't switch to Japanese and just pretended that was actually there, but still cool.
I see someone hasn't checked out the Unown entries at smogon, lol. You could also say the same about most legendary Pokémon from the anime and games. Anime Mewtwo actually does things, game Mewtwo just sits in his cave. I find it better not to compare the anime to the games too much, especially with battles. I'm glad it is that way though. I don't think I want to see turn based battling anime style. I know people get really angry with the "Dodge it!" thing, but I think it makes sense for the anime. The trainer is not just there to spit out attack moves, they're the tactician telling the Pokémon how to proceed at any given moment.
For now just gonna have to disagree with the gen 3 movies. Deoxys took me 3 days to watch and it was putting me to sleep every time. That's a first for any of the movies so far. I'll have more to say when I catch up, but don't worry, I do have good things to say too!

[/quote] I tend not to compare the anime to the games, as I’m well aware that they both work fairly differently from each other, it was just interesting for me to point out how different the Unown are in the anime rather than the games. I’m curious about the Smogon ones though

Oh I totally get it. It is fun to see those comparisons between the games and anime either way. The Smogon thing was a joke in that some of entries in Smogon make Unown out to be like the strongest Pokémon of all time: Example, here's the DP version. They're pretty fun to read, at least for me. I love how the BW one has a bunch of damage calculations against other Pokémon
