You know the moment of Hikari's second contest loss when Satoshi hid his eyes under his hat in disappointment. It was written in the Pearlshipping article in the Bulbapedia.
But the more important hint was that Satoshi's eyes were spinning simultaneously with Hikari's shaking fists before he hid them. Was this effect called 'the brown'? And tell me please if there was another girl whose action made his eyes spinning in worry.

I think there where times where he was worried or upset when a pokegirl lost, but I’m not sure about the “spinning eyes,” as it’s been awhile since I seen the series. That’s a pretty interesting hint

As far as I remember he didn’t have too much care for May’s big losses prior since he was so focused on training during her contests (but don’t quote me on that). And before the BW series, Ash’s eyes were only colored black EXCEPT for when he felt an intense amount of pain and sorrow. In which case they’d color his eyes brown and have a light reflection simulating tear-jerking. Ash and Dawn are very similar in terms of how they get upset or how excited they get over the same thing. It’s what makes their dynamic theirs! The writers did a good job of truly connecting the two emotionally and showing that a relationship between two people isn’t just one thing. Just like in real life both parties have to put effort in so then it’s not one relationship necessarily, but two viewpoints from two characters on a relationship. Which only gets backed up by High Touch and blah blah blah. I’ve rambled enough
