To start with: I am not sure if this is the right section to create this thread and if so then I am sorry.
Pokémon ratings for every generation that we've seen up till now:
OS 14.105%
JT 10.689%
AG 7.065%
DP 6.396%
BW 5.292%
XY 4.559%
XYZ 3.673%
S&M is pretty much between 2 and 3%. Pokémon has gone downhill as time went by... I did read some tweets from japanese saying the only way to make Pokémon great again is to bring back one of Ash's most popular companions from previous regions and make him/her a main character into the series again. What do you guys think if that happens? You can tell me 3% is still a lot of viewers and I'll agree to it but that amount is still low compared to what Pokémon used to have years ago and it causes loss of money to The Pokémon Company.
I've been thinking about the fact Dawn was popular as hell back then when DP came out in Japan. She is more popular than other PokéGirls like Misty and May and as much popular as Serena. I do not think they would dare to bring back Serena given XYZ just ended. May it be they will not bring back anyone as a main character as of now but may they do it for the next gen? what do you guys think about it?

The ratings get lower, because the show refuses to do anything more with its formula. It just goes like this every series.
1. Ash enters a new region with Pikachu by his side in hopes of becoming a Pokémon Master.
2. Ash meets the professor of the region and gets a starter Pokémon from that region.
3. Ash also meets some people who'll end up being his companions in the region. Some of those companions have goals of their own that they want to achieve.
4. Team Rocket follows Ash and his crew in hopes of obtaining the Pikachu.
5. Throughout the region, Ash and his companions do some Pokémon battles, enter some unimportant competitions, win some Badges or equivalent, catch some regional Pokémon, fend off Team Rocket over and over, help random strangers, etc., etc., etc.
6. After doing all that, Ash enters the region's Pokémon League, but despite his valiant effort, he is defeated. His companions likewise fail to win in their respective competitions.
7. At the end of the region, Ash's Pokémon and companions (except Pikachu) are all written out, and Ash returns to Pallet.
8. Ash enters a new region with Pikachu by his side in hopes of becoming a Pokémon Master... and proceeds to lose that region's League.
That's how the Anime goes each series.

I pretty much agree.
So you're telling it doesn't matter how many characters they might bring back, it won't stop getting lower ratings unless they change the formula? Makes sense though.
I do not think they will certainly change the formula according to what Pokémon storyboard and director Masamitsu Hidaka said in an interview... As much as Pokémon keeps running it will continue the same way: Ash goes to another region and collect 8 badges to qualify for the Pokémon League... it's exactly what you've pointed out.
I was aware whether they did not change that formula, they wouldn't get higher ratings as they used to but I know they won't do such thing that's why I thought it would be better to bring back a past companion of Ash to get some higher ratings like in DP or BW.

I think Jackster is right! If they don't change the formula or introduse a new main character then thing will keep decreasing! The most unfortune thing in the whole story is that the writers are so obsessed with that patern that they refuse to make changes and shake up things a little bit! Such a shame!

They somewhat changed the formula though. Ash is going to school and he has got more than 2 companions unlike before.
It is different to what we're used to see but it's not working since they still get lower ratings.. so I think they definitely should bring back a past main character to get some high ratings.

There bringing back gym battles and introducing a league

So we are back to basics! Not to mention with so many characters in the new crew not all of them have a good share of screene time!

They always give loads of development to some characters and Pokémon, only for them to be written off and forgotten about at the end of each series.

It's a tried and tested formula though. And yeah, it's pretty tiring to those of us who have watched seasons upon seasons of the stuff, but it's just the type of storyline that brings new viewers in, cause to some degree everyone can relate to starting from the beginning then "almost" winning. It's the kind of hero story that people want to relate to. A common argument for it to change is that people think the viewer base is mostly old fans, but from what I've seen, a lot of kids are actually getting into Pokémon here in the UK.
So that might be a reason why they're keeping everything the same. I'm not personally siding one way or another but yeah
