For awhile here, I was fairly positive that Ash was an ESTP and Dawn was an ENFP. After all, Ash doesn't get emotional, is quite sociable, and has a relaxed presence, but he's not in his head too often. On the other hand, Dawn is also sociable, relaxed, but is a bit more emotional and in her head more. Though I did stumble upon a website where it claimed that Ash is an ESFP and Dawn is an INFP.

This article uses the Jungian functions to figure it out. The MBTI types are basically a code for these functions. The functions more or less explain the mind of each personality type and how it reacts. As for Ash, he is very much living on the edge and cannot stay still. He goes from one adventure to another, which concerns his mother deeply. As for his secondary Fi, were his values ever put to the test? We know about his great love for Pokémon and how he cannot stand the abuse of them. The only situations I can recall where his values were put to test were with Paul and N. In Paul's case, he was somewhat abusive towards his Pokémon which angered Ash. As for N, his values were challenged by N (though that arc was written pretty badly, so not much can be taken from it). But Ti (what ESTP uses) users are less likely to feel offended and more likely to shrug it off. Ash is consistent with his values. Fi holders can also see the good in everyone, just like Ash. Another big difference is Te (ESFP's third trait) vs Fe (ESTP's third trait). Fe concerns the group more and Te has to do with organisation and leadership. Ash usually is in tune with his group, but sometimes got in fights over petty things, most notably with Misty and Iris. But there was one moment in the Advanced season where he got straight up mad at May for taking so long to ready herself. Ash is also good at coming up with leadership strategies, even if it's one of his weaker traits. So I think Ash is an ESFP and not an ESTP.
It's a bit more difficult with Dawn however. ESFP and ESTP have different traits, but INFP and ENFP have the same, they're just in a different order. INFP's function stack is Fi-Ne-Si-Te, ENFP's is Ne-Fi-Te-Si. The first important thing to know is that the two types both care about individuality, their values, and tend to be idealistic. Though INFPs are more likely to fall into a saddened state, because Ne is not their dominant trait and their Te trait is lower. After Dawn's double contest loss, she did this exact thing. It took her awhile to pick her motivation back up. INFPs are typically less motivated than ENFPs due to the lower Te. But ENFPs also have theirs relatively low. Dawn has both individuality (shown by her new contest techniques and moves, which Ash didn't think of) and values (she shares the same love of Pokémon and hatred of abuse) which she holds dear to herself. The question is, which does she care about more? The article uses an example for Fi (the individuality one), when she re-encountered Paul, she was offended that he didn't remember her. The Te trait is probably the best way of finding the truth, ENFPs tend to be better leaders and more out there. If you notice carefully, Dawn never really put herself out there. Zoey found her, she met Nando by chance, Kenny we don't know, Ash and Brock were by a chance encounter, Ursula found her. I have no clue for this one, but please comment on what you think Dawn is and if you think Ash is actually an ESFP.
