This isn't rocket science, guys. Too many people are disappointed and enraged at his loss.
Alain isn't a Gary Stu, he was motivated by power to protect those important to him that he ended up joining Team Flare. In TF Arc he became disillusioned with Lysandre that he will turn against him. He will most likely give up his lust for power.
Ash's battling strategy focuses on speed the most. Alain's strategy is based on brute force and toughness to outlast opponents. He got second place, guys, it's better than Sinnoh and a lot better than Unova even I enjoyed Sinnoh better than Kalos.
Ash could never beat Alain just like Dawn could never beat Zoey. Serena could never hope to defeat Aria. All of them got second place this way. They are setting up this symbolism to prepare for the new main Sun and Moon cast. Which I think are Ash, Dawn and Serena as they undertake the Island Challenge of Alola. At least this is my guess. This also leaves possibilities open for another Battle Frontier arc.
The show is about to become better and better.

I agree with you, second place isn't bad at all either.
People are just mad because they kept saying that XY gave Ash a lot of development and that it would be perfect for him to win since it was the 20th anniversary. I think this is just gonna make Ash even stronger.

I think this is just gonna make Ash even stronger. In order for Ash to really win, he has to use Charizard and Pikachu, with Pikachu as his last Pokémon. Think Orange Islands and Battle Frontier. When he used Greninja as his last Pokémon, I knew he was going to lose.

You would think Ash's Charizard be involved in the Mega Evolution, considering very late BW brought him back but not expand on his potential further. Why we focus Trevor for Mega Charizard Y and not Ash's Charizard to experience Y is beyond me.

Yet they manage to have him remember Dawn's Piplup. XY is strange since it's a largely self-contained story.

You would think the majority of the creators handle their works better than this. GS Ball, Ho-oh, Dawn, beginning of Best Wishes to XYZ.

I'll forgive them if they bring back Dawn for good. Her BW cameo while it constituted an unusually long story arc itself, was pretty bad not just because of the fillers. Better hope she shows up at around the end of XYZ. Because I can't stomach the thought of them making Amourshipping part of series canon when there's very little chemistry and development.

Generally whenever Pokémon has an hourly special, there's usually a special before or after it. I wonder after Team Flare arc, if we'll get a special episode.... I mean they've done mega evolutions already and Zygarde is the center of the current arc... What if the special is about something more light-hearted? Like something related to Dawn and what she's doing currently? She did promise Ash that they'll definitely meet again. So maybe Dawn would arrive at Kanto waiting for Ash to return from Kalos. Dawn is very likely to know about Alola and she does look like she needs a break. Dawn is the closest girl to Ash and Serena looks like she wants that same bond.
It's interesting that Dawn's Piplup gets mentioned, Ash does Z-move style movements, etc. XY is foreshadowing SM.
