I think I know the identity of those OVAs, they are actually shorts that played before the Pokémon Movies: The playground one: Pikachu's Vacation (https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/PK01) The Exeggcute one: Pikachu's Rescue Adventure (https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/PK04) Omg those are exactly it! I watched them from these discs my parents had and I'm surprised to find out they first debuted before I was born. I think my parents got them off my mother's brother cause HE liked Pokémon a lot back then lmao. Ahhh and I remember Togepi was my absolute favourite Pokémon and I was so obsessed with it audaThey ARE pretty long posts but I like reading them! It's refreshing to get some perspectives that aren't totally Pearlshipping yknow? I DO remember waking up super early to watch DP lmao, it's like that meme where my childhood self is the muscly doge and now I'm the weak dog. Ah, my parents didn't allow consoles so I played a couple of games on emulators before I went to uni and then EVENTUALLY bought myself a 3DS and my first proper game was Ultra sun haha. I was actually kinda disappointed that selene didn't appear in the anime cause she looks the most like me and I lowkey wanted to see what she'd be like

Most likely the DVDs were bundled with the Pokémon Movie DVDs (either that or the movie DVDs already had the shorts on them and you only watched those)

I asked her a few years ago if she remembered the movie at all and she all could say was that there was "an island". That's more than I thought she'd remember, so that was cool. I believe some of those "Pikachu shorts" were included within the same VHS/DVDs as the movies. I think it's the same with the blurays, but not too sure. There was also some bundle including the "christmas/snowy" ones together. It was a nightmare finding the Japan exclusive shorts, even moreso finding them translated for what little dialogue they may have had

I think my parents ONLY had the shorts, cause I definitely don't own the first movie...even when I got into Pokémon again the only thing I had available in my house was the Entei movie and those shorts. There was also a cute twin pichu short I watched haha. They were VCDs as well I think, and Cantonese dub

He was never outright abusive towards Dawn. They barely interacted. Dawn was one of the few people he tolerated better. He even has a nice chat with her where he shares his thoughts and feelings about Ash.
He was beginning to mellow out and open up towards the end. He even praised his Pokémon after finally losing to Ash. I always saw that as Paul acknowledging he doesnât have to be so severe with his Pokémon and will improve his relations with them from that point on. (He learned this from Ash, of course; they learned from each other.) Not that he wouldnât still be aloof with them, just not so abusive and cruel. Same goes for his attitude towards the human characters. I believe he learned he didnât have to be such a jerk towards people just to prove his toughness or independence. I always felt like he was overcompensating - trying to be the opposite of his brother, after his brother disappointed him. But through his rivalry with Ash, he realized he didnât need to try so hard to be who he wanted to be (who he thought his brother was.) But I agree: his development couldâve been more obvious.
Meanwhile, Misty continues to be toxic with both her Psyduck and Ash, even to this day. Talkin about her return in SM; she just loves to provoke him, for no other reason but to get a reaction out of him. Manipulative brat! Shipping aside, I donât even like their sorry excuse for a friendship. I hate that Ash is still friends with her.
I am aware of that. I've been watching since gen1. But in retrospect I think the type-disadvantage thing is still a valid point against the slap (especially in-universe). And even that early on, trainers had to challenge gyms using what Pokémon they had. So the show almost immediately contradicts itself and has dumb logic trying to justify her b!tchiness.
Look, I do think the slaps are funny. But I have always hated Misty. She's just a terrible person and character, whose flaws are never addressed or developed. I've been writing an essay over the past few months detailing everything I see wrong with her character. I may or may not post it here.

I don't think gyms and what Pokémon any trainer would have at the time of facing them have anything to do with this scene in particular. I'd say it is simply what it looks like. Ash was excited to use his new Pokémon against something stronger without thinking and paid for it in two ways. One, his Pokémon got badly hurt. Two, the slap and lecturing from Misty. If you want do want to tie early gyms into this scene; Misty offers to help Ash against Brock's gym. Ash declines this offer so Misty gets angry and leaves for a while. Most of these scenes require full context. Otherwise you can easily just say that. Misty is mean to Ash in this episode and that episode. She must be evil! She wants that other Pokémon to hit Psyduck on the head? She's the devil! Even this last thing I mentioned with Brock's gym, Misty gets angry at Ash for refusing her help. But that's not the full story there. Before any of this, Ash is already angry because Flint, Brock's dad, makes fun of his ability as a trainer by laughing at the very thought of him challenging Brock. Misty starts off reiterating what Flint was trying to say, about how much stronger gym leaders are than normal trainers; while also telling him she'll help him if he asks, in a discourteous manner, I'll give you that. Ash brushes her off without a second thought, in an also rude way, basically taking out some of his anger on her. I think it's the way he refused that sets her off, they both have short fuses. Ash wants to use his own Pokémon, he says, but has no problem accepting help from a Haunter later on that he never catches? Like you said, the show contradicts itself often. In this case, so he "prove himself he can do it" without resorting to having Misty help. I think that's what I'm trying to get at here, there's always two sides to these encounters. Though, off the top of my head having recently watched all this, Ash starts most of these by saying something himself. There's times where Misty first says something about Ash and he quickly tries to turn it around on her, sure. But that really goes for literally everyone in the group so far from what I've seen. Brock, May and Max have also made some uncalled for remarks at Ash. Even his own Pokémon laugh at him at times. This I take as friends being friends. That's part of why I like Pokeshipping to begin with. It's a bit more complex than "they were nice to each other one time." There's way more to work with than just the times they're nice to each other. Even when they're at each other's throats, there's always a real reason and a feeling of something else there. Whether its concern or some kind of disagreement. Last thing, I'll just mention again that I'm in the middle of watching the show (still on AG) and I'd rather see everything through that itself than learn about new things through a forum post. I waited so long for this. So.. I only read about half your post there. It sounds awful but this really is a case of "its not you, its me". Sorry if I didn't have things to say about other parts of your arguments or post in general. I don't think either of us expected to get into something like this on a topic about simply letting other people know what other ships you're into.

Before I had seen the DP anime arc, I honestly wasn't much of a shipper when it came to the anime. I'm pretty sure I had been a little bit of an Advanced shipper if at all. I was more likely to ship other characters and not Ash, until I saw Dawn that is

I think for me, the whole Ash rescuing people not necessarily being shipping hints is an interesting point to be fair. Ash has always shown to rescue people and Pokémon when their in danger (which includes his companions), which shows that Ash always values the lives of everyone around him. Those moments in The Rise Of Darkrai where Ash tries to save Dawn’s life are certainly no exception to this. Here’s the thing though, I want to bring this moment up in particular as it was what got the ball rolling when it came to me being a Pearlshipper. The reason why I personally see this moment as a major Pearlshipping moment isn’t even just the fact that Ash saved Dawn (given it’s totally in line with Ash’s character for him to do that). It’s more so that really brief moment afterwards where Ash and Dawn glance at each other in a rather loving way, whilst holding hands that did it for me. Looking at this moment out of context, you’d maybe be fooled into thinking that they absolutely adore each other. That’s why this moment just stands out to me so much personally, and why it’s probably my personal favorite Pearlshipping moment.
Sorry if I rambled on here. I know it’s not relating to the main discussion on this thread, but I just wanted to bring it up given previous discussion.
