Note:
This thread is to be used as a reference for the Pokémon X/Y games. This is not to distract the true spirit of the forum which is Pearlshipping and bashing Amour xD. Feel free to discuss and ask questions but lets keep our focus on the ship of all ships.
Breeding guide:
You know now that Pokémon has reached the 6th generation Breeding has become very simple and now just about anyone can battle competitively.
This doesn't mean you are tournament hopping and such just if you battle with friends whether real life, on various online forums or the game itself you set your self up so much nicer for victory.
What are IV's?
IV stands for Individual values and it is the basically the potential of the Pokémon. Each Pokémon has 6 IV's ranging from 0-31.
You have HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and Speed.
IV's are important because they are stat values that get added to you once you reach level 100 (or if you are set to 50 in an online battle)
So lets give an example:
Infernape Lv. 50 Ability: Blaze
IV's: HP: 31 Attack: 31 Defense: 31 Sp. Attack: 31 Sp. Defense: 31 Speed: 31
What this tells us is that at level 100 Infernape will have more points in each stat in comparision to the same infernape with maybe 20 IV's in all 6 stats. That is a difference of 11 points meaning if they are both the same Nature The "perfect or flawless Infernape" would be faster and stronger than the decent but not perfect infernape.
How do you IV Breed?
You pass IV's down with both parents now along with abilities.
So let's say we have an Infernape with the ability Iron Fist that is male with 3 "perfect" IV's in Attack, Sp. Def, and Speed and a Ditto with 3 "perfect" IV's in HP, Defense, and Sp. Attack.
This would just give you the "potential" a 6IV Chimchar. The parents only pass down 3 IV's randomly from each other but with the item Destiny Knot the parents will now pass down a max of 5IV's to the offspring. So you may notice that one egg is 3 IV while another may be 2 IV and then you have a 5IV Chimchar (Well done!) Getting a 6IV Pokémon is based on chance.
Even if you breed an Infernape that is 6IV's with a Ditto that is also 6IV's you are 95% certain to get a 5IV Chimchar. the 6th perfect IV is a 1/6 chance so again it is pure luck and chance. People breed hundreds and thousands of eggs attempting to get that 6th perfect IV and even more if they want a "Shiny" 6IV Pokémon.
How do I check and remember IV's?
In Kiloude City after beating the Elite 4 in the Pokémon Center there is a gentleman to the left in front of the Fitting rooms who will grade the "potential of your Pokémon.
if he looks at your Pokémon he will pass various verdicts like Decent, Above Average, or Outstanding.
Pretty Decent all around: Normally means your total IV which is a max of 186 (31x6) is low to average so about 0-93.
Above Average: Your total IV's are around 94-150 normally that means you have at least 2 perfect IV's.
Outstanding: Your total IV's are 151-186 this is mostly reserved for 5 and 6 Perfect IV Pokémon but you can get Outstanding with 3-4 Perfect IV's it all depends on the numbers of the others.
You know what is perfect by his response. If the guy says: Your Geodude has Outstanding potential, his HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Defense, and Speed can't possibly be beat! That tells you that you have 5 perfect IV's (31)
If you get something along of the lines of an insult like Your Butterfree is going nowhere fast with speed that low, or with Sp. Attack that low you won't leave a scratch on your opponent.
This means you have 0 IV's in that stat. To have 0 IV is harder than getting perfect IV's sometimes as it is purely chance unless you use.....
Any Items that can make breeding easier?
As I was eluding too in my previous point you can use "Power" Items to assist in IV Breeding.
Power Bracer: Increases Attack EV's received at the cost of speed, however it makes the Attack IV's automatically pass over without fail.
Power Anklet: Increases and carries over Speed.
Power Weight: Increases and carries over HP
Power Lens: Increase and carries over Sp. Attack
Power Belt: Increases and carries over Defense
Power Band: Increases and carries over Sp. Defense
Everstones carry over the nature of the parent holding it. So if you have a Timid Infernape and you want a timid Chimchar give the parent with that nature an everstone and it will carry over without fail.
As previously mentioned the Destiny knot increases the amount of IV's that can be carried over from 3 to 5 making breeding easier and faster.
This is the end of my Breeding segment. Feel free to ask questions or even correct me if I am not maybe as accuarte as I think I am. I will post Videos to show what I am talking about later (after I find my 3DS...)
Hope this is helpful to someone. Next installment will be Eggs moves, Movesets and battling for all.
Till next time my friends.
