So I had been thinking after the return of Iris, what would happen if Serena actually returned?? Would her character growth be noticed, or would that get shot down by Armour shipping?
My observation on Iris: People admired the way Iris had became the Unova Champion and the way she's grown as a character. However at the same time, Ash X Iris, (aka Negaishipping I Believe) was never all that of a popular ship, making her development as a character all that more noticable
For Serena however, she could come back as Kalos Queen, whitch would be noticed, however from what I've seen, people would only give that a side glance compared to her crush on Ash. As a character herself, Serena is fine. However, with all of the somewhat toxic Armour vibes that unfortunately seem to follow her, it almost drags her down.
If Dawn returned again, we would obviously notice the Pearlship vibes, however at the same time, at least I for one, would notice and admire the way She's grown as a character since she was last seen. Again, these were just my thoughts

Agreed. I’ve been thinking the exact same thing.
“Would her character growth be noticed, or would that get shot down by Armour shipping?”
No. It would definitely be overshadowed by Amourshipping, at least in the community. Gotta ignore all the toxic Amour comments that would inevitably flood YouTube and most forums.

The XY/Serena stans [on Twitter] have tried to make Serena as a character a big deal but this is the reality. The reception of Serena’s JN return is 100% dependent on whether they bring up Amourshipping in some way. Lol

Lol Ye, these days I appreciate Serena more as a character, so I hope they show that (or at least a balance of the romance and character moments to please both parties. Or who am I kidding, this is AniPoke community, no one is ever satisfied)

I've gotta ask, was Serena's character development that shallow just because of the crush aspect?

CrimsonStar We’re not saying her development was shallow. Just that the Amour community has (and will continue to) emphasize the crush over the characterization, making her seem more shallow.

I've gotta ask, was Serena's character development that shallow just because of the crush aspect? Depends on your perspective and how much of a romantic you are, I think. The less romantic someone is, I think they'd be less likely to find her character development interesting. I still don't find it as interesting as some other characters' development but I think it is more acceptable to watch these days cause I'm probably more sentimental?

See that's what I thought happened, but of course when that community seems to emphasize one piece of a bigger picture it seems to distort what people think of her. A bit sad honestly as there's a good character there, but Serena's just not my cup of tea. I've gotta ask, was Serena's character development that shallow just because of the crush aspect? See I'm a pretty big romantic myself, but based on what I saw I was pretty bored of her pretty quick. I only really remember when she changed her look after losing a showcase and her fight with Ash after he lost to wulfric. Maybe I just missed something, but I feel like it could've been done better.

CrimsonStar really? That's super interesting. I should test my own hypothesis tbh, these days I am romantic AF, should see if I now find her interesting. I will say tho, that a few of my friends who used to casually watch Pokémon (at uni, so like, very very casual non weeb/non shipper fans, "normies", if you will) said that they were like "wtf" when there was a crush. There was a general consensus that the crush felt out of place in the Pokémon anime.

I can understand your friend's reaction. Up until that point, it wasn't really heard of for the anime to have it be a character point. Yeah, there was Brock but that was more of a recurring gag if you ask me. I don't mind if characters have crushes on each other, but the tone of the anime needs to be considered. That's probably why I found it boring when it did show up in X and Y and to this day gush when I see anything remotely considered shippy between Ash and Dawn. It to me felt like Ash and Dawn set the stage for what I think the basis for a relationship should look like.
