Shipping wars are something I've only seen from afar. I've never been the type that believed liking one ship means you must bash everyone else or pairing the other characters off with whomever just because they exist. Then again, I never cared about a ship/franchise enough to join a forum about it! ...

Despite actively trying to avoid anything from the anime for years, I've seen the animosity around Serena. Humans and Pokémon alike, marching along with their pitchforks, torches and choice bands. Maybe there's something more to this, or it simply is because of shipping reasons. If anyone here was one of those people shouting from the mountain tops about how much you dislike Serena, no need to worry. Your voice was heard loud and clear.

Around the same time I first started seeing that, I also saw negativity towards Iris. However, that seemed to be more for her as a character, rather than shipping. Something about a catchphrase? Catchphrases really don't bother me. I always looked forward to hearing Dawn's.

In any case, I don't want to end up disliking any of the main characters for any reason as I finally watch past DP. Especially since I'm going to be stuck with them for 100+ episodes. Side characters, though, are a different story. For example, I don't like the May/Drew ship. I don't hate Drew, but the show itself trying to push that actually makes me dislike him a little bit for some reason. Of course, DP features some... stuff. Definitely have a strong dislike for a lot of those characters. Partly because of pearlshipping, partly because I just don't like them. Maybe I will end up being super anti-Serena, but I think avoiding acknowledging that ship's existence will be the route I take, as I'd rather focus on the things I like instead.

Are there any characters you don't like from the show because of shipping? Is it because of the show itself pushing it, someone going against that OTP Pearlshipping or just fans shipping? Did you soften up on a character after all these years? Or... are there any characters you like MORE because of shipping? I don't think Buneary would've stood out quite as much if she didn't like Pikachu. And that one just goes hand-in-hand with Pearlshipping. A maybe weirder one for me is Anabel. I don't ship that at all, but I guess her liking Ash made her a bit more interesting? On the flip side, I didn't care for that girl who liked Ash from the camp/Dusknoir episode in DP. Though it is a lot harder to care about a character-of-the-day as opposed to a more important character like a gym leader.

OTPs never got in the way of my feelings towards a character. I dislike characters more on how much they annoy me, how little I feel they contribute towards the plot, and/or how uncreative I feel their character is. Their are some shippings I dislike but harbor no hatred for ether character. I can’t really think of a pokeanime example... but from Steven Universe I like both pearl & aymathist, but do NOT think they should be a couple as they are much healthier for each other being sister-like imo.

None. When you see all other - I'd rather say - pairings and know your is the strongest, you don't need to hate any other pairing or character. I like Serena and Iris but their quirks have made them not fitting Satoshi's personality. Mao, Corni and Lillie have greater chances but not as great as Hikari's - she easily overwhelms the whole group of girls.

I'd like to discuss Pearlshipping.

The shippings never made me hate the characters. It was the people behind the ship(but every ship has their bad eggs so I try not to even hold that) and the characters main traits. I don’t like Serena because it was all about her crush on Ash and even at the end her comment of “I’ll be the girl you want” makes it seem like ash is her goal which is just against my beliefs as a person. Misty was a hothead, but she cares so I’m neutral. Mmmm the others I don’t care all too much about. Kenny was similar to Serena in the “Dawn is my goal”. Just got overly jealous and protective at the end and I’d hate that in real life. I’m mostly neutral toward characters unless it’s a direct personality thing that causes otherwise. Except sawyer, I just don’t like him cause I don’t. I wish I had a reason

Yeah, for the most part, any dislike I have for a character is completely on them as a character. I guess the shipping side of it sometimes slightly intensifies that dislike. I've not experienced fans being annoying about their ships, so I can't really comment on how that would effect my feelings towards a character. I have experienced fans being annoying about their favorite show/game though, and those have never effected how I feel about them. I try to keep characters (from any series) on a 10 point scale. Start them at a perfect score and subtract or add depending on what they're doing or saying. Roughly keeping track in my head, I'm not making notes for that or anything. It's funny, I still remember watching Advanced for the first time and hearing one of May's very first lines, "I don't even like Pokémon." Nope, minus 10! I'm kidding, but it's fine anyway, she made up for it!

I have got to say, yes. It seem, by my eyes, that went a certain character is put in a ship with, say, the main protagonist, they almost seem to get more instant popularity and more fans. Regardless of what they're character has to do with the story. I have nothing against it, but for example, a lot of people ship Ash and Misty. (I can't remember what it is called) and that seems to nearly, per say, promote Misty when she isn't even reliveant to the story, such as during the BW arc. People talked about her when she wasn't even there. This is just an example however, I don't hate Misty, just was the first thing that popped in my head.

I know what you mean about shipping a new character, mid-late into a series, with the protagonist and their popularity going up as a result, but I'm struggling to even think about another series that has done this. I haven't watched many super long anime. Normally, you know where all the relationships are headed towards from the start of a series. Outside of harem anime anyway, but those rely heavily on "funny situations" and cute girls, so that hardly counts. Or if it does happen, the protagonist or whatever other character does not even have a love interest yet.

I remember something about the writers wanting there to always be "new eye candy," in reference to Ash's female companions, whenever a new Pokémon series began. So, if you were to look at it in those ways, Ash goes off to a new region alone while leaving the "love interest" gap unfilled. It's no wonder these new characters could become popular just by having a thing for him. ...Yeah, I did just call Pokémon a harem anime.

As for Pokeshipping (Ash/Misty), you have to think about how hard it was pushed back in the day. In the anime, manga, music and other things. There was even a live musical show with a very strong push to Pokeshipping (its on YT). Had it actually been canon, it would've settled the entire thing right then and there. That and how this was from Gen 1, the generation the Pokémon Company refuses to stop reminding us about every chance they get, it's not really surprising if Misty continues to be brought up in the anime and by fans. Also having old characters return is always fun.

^This^ God, that scene made me angry! Still does. I'm glad that the English dub changed that line to something less sexist. She said something like, 'you're the kind of person I strive to be like. And you're gonna like the person I turn into!' Better, at least from the perspective of him being her mentor and role model. But the connotation here is obviously romantic so...

Actually, now that I think about it, that line is pretty awful too. She should want him to like her for who she really is...on the inside...right now. Not because of what she's accomplished or because she's changed into something she thinks he will like. What the hell?! That is a set up for a bad relationship right there. In the wise words of Ash himself: "No sense in going out of your way just to make somebody like you." Lol, Serena you're so fake.

Maybe if this line didn't have a romantic connotation, it would be ok. But this is just another awful, shallow Amour moment that I hate. One of the worst, really.

Man! The fact that her original dialogue was that garbage...just proves she was really only there for Amourshipping. Pathetic. Stuff like this makes me want to hate her again. Ugh. But I do still like her character aside from all that useless ship bait.

In 2016, I would have said Serena.

However, now days I don't hate any character. Characters have so much more to offer than just shipping. I judge characters not on shipping bias, but rather their arcs, character, and personality
