Now please, don't take this the wrong way, I don't ask this question to troll amour shippers and I don't hate Serena, in terms of Pokegirls she's middle of the road for me. (Above Iris and Misty, below May and Dawn) I just don't get the appeal of Serena beyond the crush and I want to understand. So any Amourshippers, or others who get the appeal please answer

I personally like Serena the least out of all the pokegirls & main characters in general (besides Tracey & max) just because I find her so bland as a character exspcally if you take her small backstory with ash & her crush out of the picture (I don’t l even find her crush/backstory with ash to be that deep tbh, but I’m not an amourshipper so that’s to be expected). All I see from her is slapped on feminine traits & interest with a crush on the main character. And like Misty, a lot of things she did (& said) bothered me. So i really don’t know the appeal of her ether (but am fine with those who like her & amourshipping). But here are some things i’ve seen people say about her which they like about her not regarding amourshipping:
1. Appearance: yea a lot seem to like her cuz she’s s the hwattest pokegirls which is just kinda shallow really... I don’t like dawn the most cause I think she’s s the best looking pokegirl ð 2. Development: I don’t see this at all. The only pokegirl that really developed imo is may (dawn somewhat did). They say she has good goal development but... she got a goal. Is it really that surprising she got one? 3. She’s so sweet/kind/caring/etc: so are practically all of the other main characters? I mean I know Misty is mean a lot of the times (expcally to ash) but there was a lot of instances where she was shown to be extremely kind and caring as well. And Iris is the same. She just gets annoyed with ash sometimes like friends do with each other. I don’t see her mean at all...
There are some moments I do like about her though: 1. When she interacted with Bonnie. I honestly thought they had a nice relationship & liked that she interacted with Bonnie dispite not being related to her. Shame it was gone in like XYZ... 2. When she felt bad for yelling at her Pokémon when they attacked her face by accident. It showed not only her more human side, but also just how much she cares for them.

The thing about Serena is that she's just there. She doesn't offend me in any way like Misty or Iris, but she does nothing to stand on her own two feet as a character. She's innocuous, but I should be able to say more than that about a main character she kind of fades into the background. Other than the crush she has nothing that makes her unique.
Misty was there to be a foil to Ash, May saw him as a mentor for the first time, Dawn is like May, but n more equal grounds. Since Unova was meant to be a soft reboot, Iris is a call-back to Misty. Serena is just a generic nice girl. Then there's the issue of her dream. When we first meet her, the whole reason she even left home was to find Ash. That was fine at first, but then she joined Ash and I was asking "Now what?".
It seems to me the writer's didn't know either, as Serena didn't have a goal until episode 47! We knew more about what she didn't want to do: She didn't like Rhyhorn racing, fine, but she just kind of wandered aimlessly following Ash around like a lost puppy. She has an episode where she makes a Youtube video, whoopie.
My biggest issue with Serena can be summed up in two words though: Pokémon Showcases. Serena picked the one Pokémon profession in the world that has the least to do with Pokémon. In many ways Serena wasn't a Pokémon Trainer really. Neither were Max or Bonnie, but they were kids, so they get a pass. I can just imagine the conversation in the writer's room when Showcases were dreamed up:
"We need something for Serena to do."
"Why don't we bring back Contests?"
"We've already shoehorned them into Kanto and Johto, if we put them in Kalos which isn't even based off of Japan they'll think we're out of ideas."
"I see your point, so let's call them Showcases and remove all the battling, that'll get people excited."
"You're a genius give this man a raise!"
I kid mostly but seriously Serena almost had no need to train her Pokémon. Showcases were more about things like her baking skills and a glorified appeal round. The Hoenn Contest circuit is going to eat that poor girl alive Like I said though I don't hate Serena, I just wish there was more to her.

I completelly understand what you mean! She's not a bad character but she miss the spark that the other pokrgirls had!
I think that writers tried to conect treats from the previous girls to Serena's personality and faild misserably!
As for her backstory with Ash I would had liked it more if gave us more about their interaction! And they made it to look like they were childhood friends but it just can't stand its ground! I mean Gary and Ash were more friends and have more backstories than Ash and Serena!
And don't make me start about Showcases! I don't know what that writers were thinking when they made them but this thing is an insult to the all the women in the world! God I hate the Pokémon Next Top Model!
A lot of people think that she's a well developed character because she has changed carrier a lot of times, but I think that it shows that in reallity writers didn't have a plan for Serena except of her crush with Ash! And to be honest I can't see how contest will help her with showcases when in contests Pokémon are under the spotlight not the trainer like in showcases!
And another thing that bother me to Serena as character was her lack of interest toward Pokémon! I mean sure she got 3 Pokémon but that's it! She didn't train them and they were out of their pokeballs for food and to perform! People say that it doesn't mater that she had so few Pokémon but I think that only make her look more blant! I mean May and Dawn had some Pokémon that they weren't pretty but they worked with them and made them important members of their teams, Serena's Pokémon are all cute and none of them had cause any problem to her and evolved quite quicly and not with a lot training! I would like if they made her to stroungle a little bit with her Pokémon like the other pokegirls!
Don't get me wrong I don't hate Serena but as you said I wanted more from her and the writers didn't make it possible! What a shame!

Serena got a decent character development and goal progression but they are flawed. Her goal progression was badly executed since she did nothing during +40 episodes and it took her that amount of episodes to pick a goal. Once she started participating on showcases she easily won them all without any struggle at all. Her contests arc were terribly rushed and it happened just in one arc.
Personality wise she also had some decent character development too but her crush on Ash overshadowed her character most time. Also, her interactions with Clemont were bad. I think May and Dawn are still better balanced than her when it comes to character growth and goal progression.

I just saw this now, in 2020, but I deep down had always wondered myself, "what is the point of Serena BEING there if all she does is promote Armourshipping?" Nobody I knew could answer that question, either. Sure, she got some character development and all, but what was the point of her being there? I'm not saying this to bash Armourshippers, and I don't have anything against Serena myself, other than in Poke girl order for me she's #3, above Misty and May, below Dawn and Iris. Serena did do some good things, but I myself don't understand the point of her being. Google Searches don't help ether for the amount of bias toward her. People please, save the dramatics and if somebody knows please let me know!

May be Serena is satire on girls who are usually crushing on TV and film stars, especially on those who played heroes, and obsessed with them. We all know that Satoshi appeared on TV when Serena saw him, and, indeed, he acted as a hero on the screen. Even if you remind me of the blue ribbon he gave her, its sense was really like of an autograph.
The other thing is the implication that being shy around Satoshi leads a girl to nowhere. He is not the type that understands love quirks like jealousy and he is straightforward in his actions and feelings. Basically, this is why Serena needs to outgrow shyness and try to be persistent, else she will not get Satoshi. And this is why being straightforward and having a similar mindset made Hikari and Satoshi the best lovers for each other even to the extent of infusing each other's habits and making them their own.

I feel like she's the what happens when Pokémon tries to interject a character who has a crush on the protag in there somewhere for 3 seasons and misses the mark. It felt like when they were writing Serena they didn't know what they were doing and anything good she got was overshadowed by the fact that the entire basis for her character was her crush on Ash and the showcases did nothing to help further her character. So like many, I also don't understand Serena's appeal. Whoever wants to try to explain the appeal to me feel free.
