So I just saw Movie 20 (I'm a little slow on the draw I know) I went in having only seen Bird Keeper Toby's review and he claimed that Verity was a Misty expy. So that's what I went in expecting. Other than a few opening lines and the fact that the only Pokémon we see of hers are Water-types she couldn't be any less like Misty.
In fact Verity is a Dawn expy. Female Trainer from Twinleaf town with a famous mother with Pipluo as her Starter. Not only that but her Piplup knows a moveset quite similar to Dawn's and becomes an out of ball Pokémon partway through the adventure. Of course Verity isn't the only expy in the film Sorrel being a blatant Brock clone their to take care of the Pokémon and provide exposition. The more interesting case though is that of Cross.
Cross is Paul with a fresh coat of paint. He just is. He has the exact same philosophy as Paul. He abandons a fire Pokémon for being weak that Ash then befriends and uses to win an important battle against Cross and redeeming from a bad loss (Yes, the Fire-type thing isn't just Paul, but it is a similarity).
The plot of the movie has similarities to Sinnoh as well with our heroes catching sight of a trio of Legendaries, this time the Legendary Dogs instead of the Lake Guardians. Marshadow gave off some serious Rise of Darkrai vibes. The more I though about it the more the movie felt like a retelling of Sinnoh rather than Kanto.
I mean yeah there were the obvious Kanto moments at the beginning, and with Butterfree and Charmander and that play on a certain iconic scene from the first movie, but really outside of Ash getting Pikachu nothing really cements that this is in Kanto, I mean yeah, Erika made a cameo but you could swap her out of any Gym Leader, like say Gardenia and nothing would change.
I don't know maybe I'm crazy, did this occur to anyone else. I just found it rather odd (In a good way) that the big 20th anniversary movie, despite being billed as a retelling of Kanto might as well have been a Sinnoh movie.
