This is something I've lately read around in some forums so it's been bugging me somewhat.. I did read Serena got a better character development than Dawn; what stunned me to be honest. They claim Serena not having a clear goal makes her more realistic and unlike other PokéGirls she earned much confidence in herself towards the end of XYZ... It is worth to remark they also said Serena's goal is not about battles therefore there was no need for her to either complete his team or battle.
I don't get how that makes Serena have a better character development than Dawn or May.. May neither knew what to do when she began her journey as a trainer but it didn't take her almost fifty episodes to choose her goal like Serena.. May actually decided to be a Pokémon Coordinator in AG13 while Serena did in XY 47 so such poor excuse like that doesn't work to me cause May was clearly in the same situation and it did not take SO long to choose her goal.. Also kids are supposed to be very dreamy at age 10, aren't they? being indecisive is actually something that doesn't suit a 10 year kid and futhermore it's like they were portraying Serena like an adult! which is not good to me when Pokémon is a show for kids..
On the other hand Dawn always had an established goal: she wanted to be a Top Coordinator like her mother and even though it may not be easy to notice Dawn is a flawed girl at the beginning of the series given she is overconfident of her abilities and this leads her into depression when she loses in the first two rounds of contests and Dawn had to get over her depression and learn how to not be overconfient by trusting in herself and her Pokémon... She also had insecurities as we were able to see when Minun and Plusle showed up.
Let's also be honest here, while I do acknowledge Serena did get a decent character development... Pokémon Performances can't be compared to Pokémon Contests because Pokémon Contests is not only about Performances but also Pokémon Battles which made it much harder for Dawn throughout DP. She trained with her Pokémon very often to make it better in both performances and battles something Serena did not go through at all and I really find it unfair when people say both performances and contests are not much different which is not true. Dawn's rivals might not be well-written which I agree but they were still decent and Serena's rivals are a joke for sure.
Dawn is the only companion of Ash that has gotten further in a tournament getting to the final and did not win for a very small difference which is somewhat ironic given it ties with Ash's best performance in Kalos since he also did it to the final. This is something about what Dawn's character is and I haven't said a single word about how Dawn is a true co-protagonist to Ash and helped Ash to develop strategies that helped him win some of his gym badges.
I wanna clear up I either don't hate or dislike Serena. I rather like her but I can't help feeling bugged when people claims her character development is the best in Pokémon which is not true. I've talked about this with a friend and he also agreed to me and I wonder what do you guys think about this?
