Badass Punchline: I just did!

So this is the first thread I'm making and I'd like to talk about something that's been on my mind for some time almost since the begining of XY. As the title says it's about Serena's crush on Ash, now I'm not gonna bash or compliment Serena's character, but I honestly think her crush could've been handled so much better, like for example instead of the childhood crush memory, it could've been that Serena starts to slowly fell for Ash as the series went on, I mean, personally if the writers had made something like that I wouldn't mind it because: 1-It'll give Serena more character
2-It wouldn't have made her crush such a huge part of her character. I didn't mind if it started as friends or if it was love at first sight, but the childhood memory really bugs me simply because introducing a character that has a past with the protagonist this late in the game is just (on MY opinion) mediocre writing or audience bait. I don't think that I would've liked Serena that much anyways, (call me a nostalgiic fool but I prefer Contests ten times over Showcases), BUT, if they have made it a little more like maybe lets say Contestshipping, I would've been fine with that, wich raises the questions I want to ask you guys: Do you think there is a reason for the way Serena's crush was handled? Why do you think the Amourshipping troll episodes(the dance and Serena's and Ash's "date") were written like that? Do you think I'm right or I'm completely wrong? And also, could it have been more of a threat to Pearlshipping? (cause I don't think it's that much of a problem now)

I think if Serena didn't care so much about that crush she would definatly had more character and act with more confidence in herself because everytime she watches how Ash is so intense to his dream and how amazing he is....The performances she had so far were because she learned some things from Ash and not by herself...and in the first (i think) 40 episodes she didn't had a reason to follow Ash...she could end up being a rhyhorn racer like her mom beacause she didn't had the confidence to find her own dream...she saw Ash on TV and at first she wanted to avoid her mom and then she wanted to be with Ash because of crush...and later on when she had a word with Ash she realised she had to find her own dream.
I think these episodes were funny and teasing (for Amourshippers) at the same time...both episodes show how shy Serena is towards Ash but they end up pretty well, i think...in any case i don't think the writters could let that happen because first of all Pokémon isn't a love story and if they do that..that means that the bond Dawn and Ash have means nothing to all Pokémon and us..

I see were you are coming from. To me Amour was never that serious, I mean if it were, it would show more from Ash's side like in the dance episode him saying something like "Don't worry Serena we will dance next time/party" or something like that, however there is none of that. I think Amourshipping was, at best ,just an experiment to see how fans would react to romance in the series and at worst, audience bait.

The fans that mostly reacted to romance were 90's kids and from the west... wanted their hero of the anime find a girl with the easiest way possible...but when you have romance you have a 100% hit of being a couple?? I Didn't saw those signs in DP and although Dawn is the most popualar pokegirl in Japan and Serena's fans there are countable..

As far as I know Serena's popularity is roughly neck to neck with Dawn's over there. But Dawn and Pearlshipping still reign at the top, it's basically the Misty and Pokeshipping of Asia in terms of clout. Dawn is Japan's answer to Misty and Pearlshipping is Japan's answer to Pokeshipping. The fact that her character was designed with so much parallels to and the opposite personality of Dawn makes me think that Amour isn't solely a ratings grab.

It would be so wrong if they flush all the hard work they made to Dawn...I think Serena's popularity will drop when she's officially out from Pokémon

"Do you think there is a reason for the way Serena's crush was handled?" Besides for ship bait I can't really think of a reason. Maybe a gag?
"Why do you think the Amourshipping troll episodes(the dance and Serena's and Ash's "date") were written like that?" For the titles to attract viewers, of laughs?
"Do you think I'm right or I'm completely wrong?" Her crush could've been handled better, but really I rather her character been worked on more. She mostly seemed to have revolved around ash, down to her backstory, reason for being able to leave home, & to even have the slightest bit of confidence in herself. She also seemed to reliant on him, as she couldn't face much battles that requires more than to one-shot Pokémon.
"And also, could it have been more of a threat to Pearlshipping? (cause I don't think it's that much of a problem now)" Well, depends on what you mean by 'threat.' Popularity wise, it seemed to have surpassed.
To become canon however, I don't think that would be possible with how the writers work. They don't seem to want to end ash's journey, TRios attempts to steal pikachu, nor give ash a gf.

Well when i first heard about Serena and what her backstory was like i was intrigued because i thought that would make her an interesting character having known Ash early in her life however they way she was just obsessed about him and blushed like a tomato every episode annoyed me to the extreme.
What they could of done was possibly was make her develop the crush later in the series and handled the childhood meeting better. A scenario would of been where Ash would have made her cry when they were children and when they meet again in the xy series she may still of held grudges against him but over time begin to get along and fall for him. That being said it, its too similar to pokeshipping but still a better idea than what we could. It still would of focused on being Pokémon not turn into a scene from Niseoki.
What does not help especially is Serena being a useless, unlikable character for the first 50 episodes (shes still unlikable to me).

I find it more comedic than serious. It's nowhere near the seriousness as Pearlshipping. So it isn't going to be canon anytime soon.
It's only serious from Serena's and most Amourshippers perspective, but most people would think her crush on Ash is funny. I still think it has some value.
That's also another good reason for them to have Serena and Dawn in Alola. Serena wants Ash to notice her in a romantic way, Dawn tries to help out Serena (because she wants to be helpful) but Ash ends up noticing Dawn instead. Ash and Dawn have a strong bond, and it's all the little moments between them and their off-screen promotions that make almost everyone see Pearlshipping, even Serena. Serena can't come close to Dawn in that regard. So Amourshipping to me is a mix of both comedy such as Serena spilling spaghetti, blushing, getting jealous, etc. and a tiny degree of seriousness from Serena because she is in love with Ash rather than a simple crush. Pearlshipping has some comedic value as well but it's mostly Dawn acting tsundere towards Ash.
