Bc you guys needed a new topic to debate on, I'll give you one.
Who do you think is the most likable companion and the least likable companion? (I'm trying to make this as dramatic as I can to leave room for argument lol so keep that in mind)
I'll write about why I like dawn so much later.
But my least favorite is hands down serena.
Amourshippers or serena fans always complain about how misty was a terrible companion because she was "abusive", "angry" and "narcissistic" or how dawn was a bad character because of how over confident and egotistical she was at the beginning of her journey or how may was "selfish and whiny" and "thought with her stomach" or that iris was annoying because she was so extatic and child like but never seem to notice that's why people like them. One of the reasons I hate serena so much now is because of the fact that she doesn't have one single unlikable trait (aside from the fact that she's done literally nothing substantial for the group and her only memorable quality is her crush on ash) and that really bugs me. For example, I love iris because she's the complete opposite of everything we've seen in a Pokegirl so far. She's crazy, loud, carefree, and actually likes the outdoors and the things that nature shows us. Misty hates bugs and "creepy gross things" dawn refused to sleep outside, and may didn't even like Pokémon at all. I think that in of itself is so cool because we really get to see a less girly character. Don't get me wrong, iris is pretty girly, but she's not afraid to do what guys can do too. She's athletic, which is a huge change from dawn (in a meteoric rise to excellence she could barely keep up with ash- granted she was carrying a Pokémon) and she's very adventurous and not afraid to get her hands dirty which I think is great because even ash has a hard time keeping up with her and her unpredictability. However, she's still very childish and oblivious. This is seen through her "ash is such a kid" gag, which is really just there for irony because she's arguably the most immature one of the best wishes group (but she's still much smarter than ash in multiple areas) and she also tends to have that child like elitist personality where she thinks she's so much cooler than everyone without thinking of consequences (seen in her rivalry with Georgia and her constant rivalry with ash to upstage him in literally anything). Her oblivious side is also seen throughout her arc with excadrill (she was oblivious to his problems and only cared about winning), when she fought with ash (oblivious to his needs and concerns), and she's also very oblivious to her dragonite in general. Those 2 flaws caused most of the fandom to find her annoying but really is she much different from us? We neglect people all the time and we all have our childish moments when we all act like we're something we're not. When I first watched best wishes I always thought iris was such a good portrayal of their targeted audience- ash was ignorant towards his peers and iris was oblivious towards her surroundings and I thought that was so cool! But no one seems to think of it like I do, so iris is overlooked by lots of ppl because of this.
Serena however, is called "the perfect companion" because she's literally perfect. Which is my problem with her. She doesn't have a single unlikable trait aside from her badly written development. And honestly, the reason she's not perfect is because she's just too perfect. She has no flaws aside from being too reliant on ash and aside from her constant need to get his approval.
Actually. Her poorly written development is what ruins her for me. Developing over a puddle and a ripped dress doesn't really sit well with me as opposed to developing over your own flaws like dawn and may and iris. They're missing the entire point of Pokémon. Serena should be developing over her Pokémon (dawn and ambipom, iris and excadrill, James and chimecho, heck even jessie and Wobbuffet in X and y developed better than serena) not a poorly made outfit. I'm not saying she's completely unlikable but don't say that she's all that. I found her to be very dramatic, which honestly I find to be unlikable because of she's dealing with her struggles. It's understandable to get upset overy losing your first competition but like not even dawn was THAT upset and heck dawn knew what she wanted to do since birth practically. She even had her mom's publicity as a dumbell weighing her down. But serena just broke down after one loss which I thought to be very unrealistic. Yes, she's like 10 or 11, and yes its Pokémon so realistic portrayal is a stretch, and that's true, but not with real people: Pokémon, yes. People, no. Dawn held herself together for three losses but didn't reenact Les Miserable unlike serena. Dawn actually used her losses as development to strengthen and develop herself and to do better next time. Serena just broke. She freaking cut her hair! It's not like your fenniken DIED. Sure he tripped but don't rub salt in the wounds serena I'm sure he felt bad enough. They even gave her better animation in that scene. But what really bugged me the most was that she barely developed at all after this super dramatic moment. They used it as a marketing tool! They used this "I'll change my ways and change my entire self! I'll be a new me!" As a way to advertise character customization in X and y. Like, I get that its super symbolic or whatever but at least show more of a change for her. I know she developed later but this was a horrible way to start her character off (especially since it was like episode 70?). Serena isn't perfect. Just like the rest of the Pokegirls, but her unlikabke traits aren't even relatable which makes me sad because they aren't her fault, they're just poorly written pot holes in her character. It really rubs me that wrong way when people label her as something she's not. None of the Pokegirls are perfect. And that's why they have their own fans. But they're just trying so hard with Serena to make her absolutely perfect in every aspect and I think that's why she's developing so poorly. She doesn't have a single trait she needs to fix (aside from being absolutely terrible to her mom). I can't be the only one that sees this
