Misty:
-is NOT abusive. Keep in mind, she was hot tempered and her "abuse towards ash" was to basically further that archetype. If it was actually abuse that she caused him, it would have been addressed as opposed to being dropped in the next scene. She cares for him, but sometimes she just isn't willing to deal with his BS. Also, she's not obsessive over ash, she's a hopeless romantic (not like brock but it's there). There are COUNTLESS times when misty fangirls over guys other than ash.
May:
- IS. NOT. SELFISH. Oh my arceus I cannot STRESS how much this one bugs me. Yes, she WAS selfish, but, SHE CHANGED. #CharacterDevelopment anyone? She *was* selfish towards ash and Pokémon at the beginning, but then she changed for the better as she learned that Pokémon had feelings too and that they would do anything for her, and in turn she began to treat them MUCH better. The girl that left little root just to travel the world and use Pokémon just for her own benefit is NOT the same girl that tied with ash in that unofficial contest. She's changed. She's not selfish, she is caring.
Dawn:
- Dawn. Dawn is probably the most skewed companion since serena was introduced, next to serena herself. Dawn was the most popular companion up until x and y started and her ship with ash was also the most popular in japan. Since serena came in, amour became just as popular as pearl if not more popular over all, except I'm pretty sure pearl reigns in Japan still. Dawn, due to the competition she gibest with amour, has been dubbed a LOT of bad things which she is not.
•"Dawn is very reliant on ash"
-- this is not true, in fact if anything it's quite the opposite. Ash is the one that uses her techniques (counter shield, spin, ice aqua jet, stored electricity, when she stayed up with him to train gliscor which didn't benefit her in ANY way...). Yes, she asks for his guidance on occasion (critiques on her combinations) but it's not to the point of where she cant make decisions for herself.
•"she's way too over confident! She's not even that accomplished!"
-- ok first of all, dawn goes through character development (wow!), and this development changes the way she acts. Yes, she is EXTREMELY overconfident in the *beginning* of DP, but she changes because she realizes that the life of the road she chose is not an easy one, which can be seen in tanks for the memories. Being a coordinator is much harder than regular battles because it requires a lot more thinking. You need to keep in mind that on top if power, you also need to be a creative thinker to mess up and use the opponent's combinations to your advantage. You have to be good at battling AND be creative enough to come up with appealing combos on the spot, which can be seen in the Zoey Vs Dawn battle. I'm not saying Dawn could take on cynthia and win with her experience, but may and dawn deserve a lot more credit for being coordinators. Especially dawn. She made top 2 on her first try, which may didn't even come close to. This is a pretty big accomplishment in itself. Also, pokechic.
Iris:
- man. I feel so bad for iris. She's definitely the most hated and under rated companion. Misty is a close second. Everyone always says she's the worst because of her goal which she isn't very loyal to. She wants to be a dragon master, but usually trains excadrill and spends little time with axew. If you watch her special episode, you'd know that this is because her journey isn't something she wants to rush. She wants to be great in her own time, because unlike may and dawn she doesn't have a time limit.
-"'ash you're such a kid!' Is annoying!" Okay but is she wrong? Ash is totally immature. It's not to say that iris isn't bit hey someone's gotta point it out. Plus dawn even agrees with her.
Serena:
- she isn't a knock off of may, she's not a clone of dawn, and like misty, she isn't obsessed with ash, yet she relies on him for assistance. However, she does require his approval for a lot of stuff. Not only does she require his approval TO DO THINGS, she also does things FOR HIS APPROVAL. I'm not saying this is the case 100% of the time, but she does require his approval regardless, which really is just part of her character at this point. She cant make decisions on her own due to lack of experience, so she asks her skilled crush for help, so in the end it's the best of both worlds for her.
--Also, people tend to glamorize her for being flawless, which she isn't, like all the other pokegirls. Dawn can cook just like serena, may took her time with her goal just like serena (which didn't take nearly as long, and this is apparently a good thing too???), misty gives hits that are JUST as obvious as hers, and both dawn and may have a very similar battle style to hers. She also doesn't battle a lot like iris. (Which is weird, because she battled like 3 times with fenniken before it evolved, and yet axew and buneary had battled basically the entire series and didn't even show signs of evolution.). She's not as original as everyone says she is. She recycles alot of what we've already seen. So, there's that.
--She is unique though. A lot of people say that her crush clouds her development and character traits and screen time which is true, but not all the time. She doesn't go out of her way to battle as much as may and dawn or heck even iris but that doesn't mean she isn't useful. She has come up with a lot of cool concepts on her own and grown differently from other characters.
Just wanted to throw this out there. I couldn't say much about Serena bc I haven't finished x and y
Anything you guys wanna add?
