Does this even technically a date? What exactly defines something as a date?

Does this even technically a date? What exactly defines something as a date? It wasn't a romantic date like most thought, it was just a social outing where Ash and Serena went shopping alone without Clemont and Bonnie. Ash and Serena didn't even stay together the entire time; Ash ditched Serena and shopped by himself most of the time. With something like this, how can Ash be concerned with romantic feelings, let alone Serena? Definitely not yet. However, there was a handful of nonverbal and contextual hints, and since Japan is a high-context culture, they have a bit more meaning.

No, no, no. The title isn't as shippy as it seems. Here's why:
The Vow Tree is a vow to Pokémon, not trainers.
The "date" is just a ride on a train, and Ash rarely notices her on it.
Ash ditches her to go do something.
The present he gave her is just a thank you gift for finding a gift for the Pokémon.
"It's a trap!" - Admiral Ackbar
Meh. PearlShipping is my OTP. Other episodes are mainly Serena hints.

If I'm wrong, then any episode in the lyra arc should count right

Why are we still talking about it? Even amourshippers admit that it wasn't really a date.

Why are we still talking about it? Even amourshippers admit that it wasn't really a date. Well it's not so much about the date anymore; more Amourshippers care about the gift giving's "Japanese cultural symbolism" and Serena's blue ribbon Here's what Bulbapedia says about the Ash hint: But this is also an older and more mature Ash. There is no way OS, AG, DP, or BW would be mature enough to gift the gift anyway. Plus, Ash gave the gift for practical reasons; it's not like his gift giving broke Ash out of his denseness. His reason was "thanks for the help", not "I want to make Serena happy". Ash has no use whatsoever for the ribbon anyway. While the ribbon is Serena's most treasured item, it was the least treasured item to Ash when gave it to her. In other words, Ash didn't give up anything of value to Serena compared to Dawn where he gave up his beloved Aipom to her. (so what if they got the idea from Zoey and Brock? Ash could have easily denied the proposal)

I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean as much as people are saying
