They're canonically ten years old (as much as Ash should NOT be, and Dawn in current canon too) but I think part of the confusion is that Pokémon trainers, for all intents and purposes, live like 'mini-adults.' They lead their own, independent lives and pick up life/social skills faster than kids typically tend to. My thought was basically that once you turn ten and get a Pokémon you are considered an adult. I mean you travel through the wildness alone and capture animals that would in real life would be classified as WMDs

I do quite like the idea of how in the Pokémon world, you basically adapt more adult characteristics once you start your Pokémon journey. I think that is a very fair point. It’s just that what bothers me personally is that (unlike most other shows where the characters don’t age), the Pokémon anime clearly follows some kinda continuity and there’s clear mentions throughout the anime of time passing. Because of this, I just can’t see Ash as 10 years old at least beyond the Indigo League season. I’d say not to trust a word that the narrator says about a character’s age after the original series (especially given that he claims May and Dawn to be 10 when they start their respective Journeys, even though they’re supposed to be whatever Ash’s age is at the time of their series). Maybe this is just my head canon at work here, but I just can’t see Ash, Dawn or literally any of his other companions as 10 years old (asides from Max and Bonnie who are below 10), regardless of what the narrator wants you to believe.

Yeah I don’t support this. Sorry
That last post wasn’t me trying to argue with anyone. I was just posting my own head canon on why Ash shouldn’t be 10 years old after the Indigo League. To be fair, I do fully understand why the people behind the anime want to keep Ash 10 years old. They just want to have our main character appeal to their target demographic. In hindsight, I totally get that. I just can’t buy it at this point, even despite it being word of god. At the end of the day, it’s all just opinion. Everyone can believe what they want to believe. I just can’t buy into Ash being 10 regardless of what the people behind the anime or the narrator want you to believe. I just see continuity as stronger evidence than some character profile. Guess we can agree to disagree.

PokeEarth just has a really long orbital period around its sun. Kidding, but as plausible as anything else

That actually does make a little bit of sense, but dang, Ash must’ve waited a really long time to start his Pokémon journey if that was the case.

Nesh Lol, that's actually a really good theory. So I noticed the link I gave doesn't work unless you type it in manually without capitalizing "Pokémon" and without the accent over the e... weird. I'll just quote his profile with a rough translation: サトシ ある出会いから、ポケモンバトルの最強を目指す10才の少年。正義感が強く、まっすぐな性格で、夢はポケモンマスターになること。 Satoshi
From a certain encounter, a 10-year-old boy aiming for the strongest of Pokémon battles. He has a strong sense of justice and a straight-forward personality, and his dream is to become a Pokémon master.

It’s pretty much his character bio from every series when you really get down to it
