I don't even see why people thought Amourshipping progressed, a few examples being:
XY006: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY007: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY013: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY021: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY025: Serena spills spaghetti
XY026: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY031: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY040: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY053: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XY059: Serena spills spaghetti, and platonic clueless Ash
XY060: Serena blushes at Ash, Clueless Ash
XY080: Serena spills spaghetti, clueless Ash
XY085: Serena blushes at Ash, clueless Ash
XY090: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XYZ012: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XYZ019: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XYZ020: Serena spills spaghetti, Clueless Ash
XYZ027-029: Serena worries about Ash
XYZ032(?): Serena blushes at Ash
XYZ035: Serena blushes at Ash
It's just that they have hardly any interactions on the same level as between Ash and Dawn. Someone please present a list of Pearlshipping progress to compare with.
Did Amour really amount to anything? Or was it just ship teasing to troll Amourshippers? It's funny after years of Amourshippers pushing and shoving the ship down peoples' throats, they just noticed that it's stagnating. Serena's obvious crush is starting to look like a running gag rather than serious plot development. It's almost on the same level as Iris' Axew getting lost. Therein lies the fatal flaw of Amourshipping, Serena cannot bond with Ash like how he bonded with Dawn, mainly out of her own passivity, complacency and idealism. Ash offers his hand to dance with her, she just stood there and froze. She basically spilled her spaghetti then realized it was too late. In simple truth, Serena has become her own obstacle, in other words the biggest problem Serena has to face is herself. And it's funny that nobody around her can help her with her 'progress', even when they supported her crush on Ash.
Ash and Dawn's relationship is of a mutual nature. Ash and Serena's? It's completely one-sided on Serena's side. And Ash at the very least cares more for Dawn than he ever did for Serena. And Serena just takes his reactions too seriously and thinks he loves her. It's delusional thinking on Serena's part, Ash thinks of her as a good friend, but not on the same level of how he sees Dawn.
What was the writers' point? Nobody in Kalos is willing to help her out even when they expressed support for her. Her passivity and rampant idealism, again is killing the whole prospect and potential progression of Amourshipping. Serena can only blame herself for not really getting closer to Ash in the same sense Dawn has. Serena refuses to take initiative and just hesitates whenever she gets the chance. The ONLY way she can get out of this situation is when she notices someone with a strong bond with Ash, and she is none other than Dawn. And she can't do that without leaving Kalos and going to Kanto with Ash. Amourshippers better keep their fingers crossed and hope Grace convinces Serena to leave Kalos with Ash. And no, she isn't going to make a confession or anything because she's still too passive and idealistic. If she still acts the way she does, then how can it be become canon by the end of XY?
Option A- Serena goes to Kanto with Ash. Meets Dawn, sees Pearlshipping but gets jealous. Probably the best option for Serena because she will finally get character development regarding Amourshipping but also Pearlshipping becomes more developed as well because with Dawn noticing Serena's crush on Ash would make her uneasy or in some ways unsettling for her.
Option B- Serena stays in Kalos and gets over her crush on Ash or just waits for Ash to return to Kalos. Amourshipping is sunk or about to sink.
Option C- Serena goes to Kanto with Ash. Doesn't meet Dawn. But that still means Amourshipping stagnates and declines because she is still set in her ways. There's nobody to 'motivate' her to push her towards in taking the initiative regarding Ash. It's obvious that the things Dawn does to Ash would be considered unthinkable by Serena.
Maybe there are other options. But seriously, it takes someone like Dawn to snap Serena out of her passivity and complacency. Going to Alola alone with Ash wouldn't help her at all, unless if you're a delusional-as-f*ck Amourshipper. Dawn can at least pick herself up by the bootstraps simply because she is a more confident person, at least when around Ash. Serena, sorry, I'm not convinced that she is capable of the same things Dawn is capable of.
