Here's another hint to go over - the difference is quite great:
But in the dubbed version, it goes like this:
First things first, Misty. In the original, Misty addresses both Danny and Ash before Ash makes his statement. She says this after cheering Danny:
"Ash, while I'm at it.. you do your best too!"
However, in the dubbed version her exact saying is replaced with this:
"Please be extra careful, Danny!"
This is easily a manipulation by the dub. In the original, Misty shouted to both Danny and Ash, while in the dub she does not say anything to Ash at all. But why is that? "Doesn't that mean that Misty's side of the ship is better in the original?" No. That leads us to Ash's response:
Here's how Ash responds:
Original:
"Why is it 'While I'm at it' for me?"
Dubbed:
What's she so worried about him for?
Now it is clear why Misty only cheered Danny in the dub. They did that to highlight Ash's 'supposed' jealousy, which would lead to the conclusion that Ash has feelings for Misty. That's the problem. Once again, the dub has made Ash and Misty something they're not. Sure, there are hints that are the same in both versions, but this is not one of them.
Dispute:
"That doesn't change the fact that Ash fell off the cliff because of her"
Yes, but now we know the reason is muffled and has much less to do with Ash's 'jealousy'. In addition, even if the occurrence was directly related to Misty, it has much less of an impact than what most see. The original is simply giving out an Ash that wants to be encouraged to win without being treated lowly, while the dub makes it a point that Ash wants that same 'love' interest Misty has for Danny. It went from "I should be treated better" to "I NEED YOUR LOVE".
If the dub version of this was canon, then this hint would almost confirm Ash could have something for Misty. The dubbed version of this, however, is the most mainstream and most fans that only care about the Original (or 4Kids) series could care less about a couple other than Ash and Misty. And in most [nostalgia anime only] fans' minds, this dub-manipulated scene 100% canon.
