We all know Ash and Dawn share a strong bond on some level or another, and have similar views I'm sure on where it could/should go. But what exactly drew them together to begin with? What do you guys think made them such good friends, or potentially more, above all others they traveled with? It wasn't too far into the series where the high fives started, and it wasn't even 20 episodes in where Dawn dressed up to cheer for Ash's Gym Battle.
I've got a little theory of my own, but first I want to see what everyone else thinks.

I think that the cards are very much played to Dawn's favor. First of all, I would think the female can interact more with Ash when there is only three in the group instead of four. But more importantly, out of all the female goals, having a contest run is the most involved goal (also the one most similar to Ash's league run). Ash and Dawn started at the same time with the same final competition in mind, unlike May who had think at first and had Max around. From this alone, they are already at the equal state of mind and are by far the most inclined to work together. Finally, it seems like Dawn was made specifically like Ash so they could have best chemistry, the strongest bond, and the most trust between each other. Their parallels show this even more. I bet there's a lot of other factors also that I didn't put, but the point is that it was done on purpose specifically for Pearlshipping. Remember DP was the most thought out season, just take a look at Chimchar's story from the start to the end; Paul was also thought of right from the start so they went the deepest with character development.
That's what I think at least.

That's not too far from what I was thinking, actually. About how Dawn had a dream from the very beginning and had set her mind to it, and her and Ash were more or less equals in mindset despite Ash being more experienced. He taught her a few things, but he was more of a partner to her than a mentor; like in inspiring strategies with one another, for instance. But even that came a bit later. I think consciously or not, Ash saw himself in her, or saw the similarities in their dreams and ambitions, and could relate to her well as a result. Ever since she began, she really wanted to be Top Coordinator. Naturally Ash wants his friends to succeed, but if she's chasing one actively like that, then he can be involved in it, and he clearly seemed interested considering he attended every single one of her contests, when he hadn't with May.
So I think it was her fire, her ambition that initially made him take interest. And then they grew even closer over time because of general chemistry. That's just my theory.

Or maybe they both had that firey passion which made them the perfect team.

You should write an analysis on this topic, chosen!

When I'm inspired enough, I just might! I'd have to look into the earlier episodes more and think it over lol.

What is really obvious and what is also so fantastic, is the fact that not only Ash himself taught her a lot, but the other way around too: Dawn taught Ash a lot too during the whole DP saga. Everyone remembers them creating strategies, tactics, moves, etcetera. It was always them. Growing with each other. DP obviously, really emphasized Ash and Dawn. One of the many things what makes Pearlshipping so unique and simply distinguish itself from other ships. And I agree. Unlike with May, Ash was totally not a mentor towards Dawn. Some people say instead of a mentor, more of a brother. But, no. It was simply more than that. Partners as you said. Helping each other out when/if needed, backing up, make each other smile, etcetera (High Touch!). You should definitely write and show your theories and analysis Chosen. I'm sure they will be great, logical and well thought out.

I'm flattered you think so! That's something I'd have to put some time and thought into. I wonder what else I could add aside from what's in this thread.
