To bring new viewers in? what do you mean? The problem lies Pokémon is always been a show for kids and although via nostalgia factor they sometimes aim to bring back young adults that watched the show when they were kids, it's still a show for kids and that is why it hasn't changed its formula over time... Because kids grow up and stop watching it when they turn into teens therefore new kids get to watch the show that is why they don't need to change formula given there is no need to make solid timeline of events that will not repeat for ever because the series will keep running and will not end. I'll tell you short example to what I just said above: my older brother's favorite PokéGirl is Misty cause he grew up watching OS but mine is Dawn and it is because I grew up wathcing DP. There is obviously people that never stopped watching the series despite all these years but it still doesn't force them to change the formula because only matters on how it affects japanese. They somewhat changed the formula though. Ash is going to school and he has got more than 2 companions unlike before. It is different to what we're used to see but it's not working since they still get lower ratings.. so I think they definitely should bring back a past main character to get some high ratings. There bringing back gym battles and introducing a league I'm not sure about that since Ash's teacher said they're still looking forward to establish Pokémon League culture in Alola but who knows, probably yes or not.

The consequences of them constantly doing the same thing each season results in these problems:
1. Ash does not obtain his dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master.
2. His companions also do not obtain their respective dreams, and will likely never do so thanks to getting written out of the anime.
3. Ash's Pokémon except for Pikachu also get written out despite their hard work and achievements throughout his adventure.
4. TRio, despite failing over and over again to obtain Pikachu or some other goal, nonetheless continue to stalk him.
5. Thus, any existing bonds or relationships between Ash and his Pokémon and peers are gone, because the latter groups are no longer in the anime.
6. Finally, the entire region becomes filler, as Ash remains in the initial state he was at the beginning of the saga—ready to start a new adventure with Pikachu by his side.

I couldn't agree more.. It is just too late to change the formula tbh.
