I've noticed that amongst Japanese Pearlshippers that Pearlshipping happens to be the only major ship where Ash shows a degree of interest in a girl, but it's also reciprocated. This could be the reason why Ash feels so strongly about Dawn and vice versa.
Which is why to them Pearlshipping is more like Ash -> Dawn rather than Dawn -> Ash.
So when compared to the overall scheme of things,
Serena ->>>> Ash <->> Dawn
Serena really likes Ash and is in love with him but Ash for some reason likes Dawn a bit more than Dawn liking him.
After all, it was Ash who high touched her first. The only time Dawn ever initiated it was at the last episode of DP.

That's why I find Pearlshipping to be strong, the bond between Ash and Dawn feels natural.

I would think so. In Dawn's cameo for example, it was all about how Ash was longing and longing to battle Dawn. He didn't feel such a passionate desire when seeing May or Misty again - maybe Ash thinks of Dawn as special without him realizing it. You could also tell he seeks Dawn's approval when he was disappointed by Dawn's teasing but not Iris's (to the point where he wanted to prove himself in front of her by going into the cave). There was surprisingly little focus on Dawn showing interest/longing for Ash; it was the other way around. And I'm glad the cameo was handled that way because the girl showing interest in Ash is much more common.
Ash may show interest in his other companions, but it's in a nonexclusive nature where Ash is just being friendly. With Dawn you can see that it's much more, especially because of the lyrics in High Touch.

Ash may show interest in his other companions, but it's in a nonexclusive nature where Ash is just being friendly. With Dawn you can see that it's much more, especially because of the lyrics in High Touch. Amour seems to be a gender reversed Pearl in some aspects. Serena wants and seeks Ash's attention and approval for things. Ash wants Dawn's attention and approval. Dawn is definitely someone important in Ash's life, she is the most important girl in his life. Ash's battling styles emulated Dawn's style. That's why if he were to feel like himself again, Dawn must physically be by his side. Compared to Serena, Ash is the most important male in her life, she wants to take over Dawn's role, the most important girl in Ash's life. Yet she doesn't seem to have made an impact on him, she isn't a battler like Dawn is and whenever she does battle, she emulated Ash's style. Hence Ash acts and behaves naturally around Dawn yet I feel there's some distance between Ash and Serena. Ash isn't sure how to act around her, when he gave her the ribbon while scratching his nose. It's also strange in a way, Ash wants to act more naturally around his 'old acquainted' friend but Serena ends up being so shy and surprised by Ash's friendly gesture that she hesitates, even though she wished for it. This is why Dawn has to return at the end of XYZ if Serena ends up going to Kanto with Ash. It'd be like the unmovable object vs the unstoppable object. This is why there is without a doubt in my mind, my suspicions will be proven right. The parallels and differences between Dawn and Serena, Pearl and Amour are more apparent. Remember Tomioka had a hand in this to set up the next stage of Ash's journey. Dawn has what Serena needs, her way of establishing a bond with Ash and Dawn's creativity in regards to contest moves and clothing designs. Serena has what Dawn needs, the awareness of her romantic spark and feelings towards Ash. It seems to me that Serena is more discerning about clothing, something that Dawn might need as she tends to reject a lot of her designs. Dawn is a confident person who picks herself up by the bootstraps while Serena is more of an inward-thinking, self-reflecting person. This is also why I feel their personalities were planned for Sun and Moon years beforehand, they share similar names relating to them, and act as though in accordance with these celestial bodies. Ash has never really thought strongly about a girl before and after. Dawn literally changed his life so much that whenever she wasn't around, he was struggling. Ash-Greninja didn't count because he was almost neglecting most of his other Pokémon aside from Pikachu.

If Ash were to ever really show interest in a girl, she would have to be as strong or stronger than him.
Clue: Dawn's BW cameo. He wants Dawn to notice him, he wants Dawn to battle him, etc. Dawn is the only girl Ash shows interest in because she's just as strong in battling as he is.
Because Ash never really had interest in other girls except Dawn due to her battling skills, Pearlshipping is closer to canon than Amourshipping. Serena really has a long way to go to catch up to Dawn's level. Ash doesn't really see her as his equal compared to Dawn.

Also, don't forget that when Dawn and Ash had their battle in Unova at Cynthia's house. They ended up with a draw which shows how strong Dawn has become and how she is as a character. That show's how Ash and Dawn where so passionate with each other at training (Dawn was his partner at training Ash's Pokémon) and when they used to tag battle together (one of the greatest tag battles was in Pokémon movie Arceus and the jewel of life).
Unlike Dawn, Serena has skills as a performer (not as coordinator) she isn't used to battles. If she manages to work out in battling style (which i doubt it) she has a lot of work to do (starting about from zero). The only experience she has is from Ash's battles and only used this experience once (in XYZ episode 22). Serena doesn't train whith Ash, like Dawn did, and they didn't had together their own signature to show their bond. Also, Don't forget that Serena in the mirror world supposed to be more powerfull than the normal Serena and concerned more in battles but although Ash one shot her Fenekin (imagine what normal Serena's Fenekin would have happend in that battle)
Even in High touch we can see how close is Ash to Dawn.

I think to Ash, Dawn has always been strong in her own way. Dawn wasn't a student of his like May. I mean, he even adopted Dawn's battling techniques to use, in part because he saw how creative she was. I mean, it was Dawn who defeated May at the Wallace Cup while Ash was tied with May in their last battle in that Terracotta Contest, that they split up the ribbon together. Serena, well, she's more like his student because she just looks up to him and takes his advice wholeheartedly. And Mirror Serena is more like Dawn than Serena, who herself is the antithesis of Dawn.

So if Mirror Serena is a Tsundere Yandere Serena Confirmed! Dawn is a tsundere too, she's just a type B tsundere. Obviously whenever Dawn fights with Ash or gets embarrassed around him she enters tsundere mode. Mirror Serena did remind me of Dawn a bit except more brash, violent and vulgar. And still a lot like pre-depression Dawn where she was overconfident and arrogant.
